[1.3.1] Ferram Aerospace Research: v0.15.9.1 "Liepmann" 4/2/18

I was just wondering: has anyone used Infernal Robotics to make a useful instance of variable geometry? I tried to use a rotator once to compensate for fuel shift, but only succeeded in making a plane that shifted between stable and lawn dart configurations.

Yep, I made not a bad plane a couple of days ago:

It uses washers to change the shape of the wing and rails to adjust the position of rear engine for vertical take off and landing.

Changing wing shape can greatly help at supersonic speeds by decreasing Cd for about 30-40%.

I've confirmed that it works with 0.22, and I've pushed out the version 0.9.6.3 revision, changelog in the readme.

The nosecone "updates" don't actually affect FAR at all, since all it consists of is the nosecones making lower drag through the old stock system than they did before, which still gets overridden, so no problem.

Hey, shortly after intalling (before 0.22 was out) yesterday, I started getting some..."odd" crashes.

Mostly its the symptoms that are boggling my mind...:

1. ship name-tag vanishes in SPH/VAB

2. Some nodes disappear

3. nothing will attach

4. parts menu vanishes

5. cannot drop/grab anything

6. cannot delete anything

7. game bogs down to 0 FPS for a good 2 minutes

8. game finally crashes to desktop with no error or mention of anything in the output log.

any thoughts?

(yes I'm still on 0.21.1)

@rosenkrantz & dlrk: Should be fixed now; just re-download. Delete the config.xml in your GameData/FerramAerospaceResearch/Plugins/PluginData/FerramAerospaceResearch to make sure that things can restart properly.

@GalacticRuler: That's a new one.

Make sure that you're running the new KSP 0.22 and the latest version of FAR. What other mods are you using? Can you post an output_log.txt from when that crash was caused?

I have more news reguarding those crashes.

turns out FAR is causing them...which is rather weird.

lets start here:

Mechjeb uses less RAM and somehow makes my FPS plumet.

Far uses more RAM but my FPS actually climbs a bit.

I uninstalled Mechjeb(never used much of it), and left FAR, no change, next went KW, and some other things I don't use, no change.

so I've determined I cannot use FAR, as it is eating my PC alive, I thus deam this: "Not for the faint of PC"

@TomatoSoup: Make sure that you clear out the config.xml file that I've specified; it might be that the GUI is offscreen permanently and FAR will need to rebuild the config for things to work properly.

@Galacticruler: Based on what you're telling me, this isn't a problem only FAR causes. This is the result of KSP running out of addressable memory; FAR is a little RAM intensive (to save on the processor) but you'd have the same problem if you're using too much of other mods.

Based on the other things that you've said and the memory issue, it sounds like you have very little RAM on your PC or there is a lot of software hogging it; all of the problems you've said you're having make sense in the context of KSP using the page file to the fullest extent (which should mean that your HDD is thrashing like crazy) and everything is held up by the speed that you can transfer data to and from the HDD.

Ah, I thought you'd say this.

well, none of my OoM errors started until tuesday, the day I installed FAR...before then it was slow but fine for about 10 launches of 500 part ships*.

(*which actually surprised me...only 1,780Mbs of RAM with a large pagefile on this stone age toaster...)

I also keep my mods folder rather trimmed down from what it used to be.(back when mods took ~50Mbs, not 600.)

And yes, there is a lot of software on this thing, mostly Faildows Vista and AVG eating it up.

Javascript is disabled. View full album

The RAM amount is a lie, its much lower than that.

ar the pic in game or you go out the game in windows and make the screen shot ?

The specs pics are nice, but they don't really tell us anything other than you only have 2gb of memory to work with. Not sure there is anything that can help at this point aside from you adding more memory to your machine or otherwise upgrading. Personally, I'd kill AVG to free up memory.

From the bad version of 9.6.3 I deleted the xml and the cfg, which made it really funky. So then I deleted the entire folder and redownloaded FAR after you made the post to just redownload. No dice.

Actually, looking at that folder now, the .cfg doesn't seem to have regenerated even though I played with the new version installed.

Wing Exposure: Detects wing location relative to other parts and adjusts lift in a pseudo-realistic fashion (wing pieces at wingtip make less lift and more drag than ones at wing root, leading edge pieces make more lift and more drag than mid-chord wing pieces).

Bold red text, really and there was me thinking that winglets placed at the tip of the wing increased fuel efficiency and the lift to drag ratio?

Upgrades are out of the question for now.

and while I want to kill AVG, some places I visit are not the most PC friendly.

@TomatoSoup: FAR has not regenerated a config.xml in your KSP install? Make sure that KSP has the proper permissions so that the OS doesn't interfere with it.

@Sochin: Wingtips are more affected by the trailing vortex system than the wing roots are, and that vortex system is where the majority of drag comes from. Winglets increase the lift to drag ratio by (1) taking advantage of the change in the local velocity vector to create a small lift force that is oriented such that it cancels a small portion of the wing's drag and (2) increasing the span of the wing so that while the winglet part suffers from more drag than the rest of the wing parts, the aggregate makes less drag.
