How to decrease kerbal eva drag?

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to make small craft for Laythe. So i decided to make it with external command seat. But when I tried to ascend my kerbal ate plenty of dV by a huge drag. In fact my kerbanaut is covered up with another part from the airflow and should not be the most draggy thing on the craft. So, I know that if I put seat to small service bay it's some kind of solution, but cargobay is quite heavy and has some drag too. Is there any other ways to reduce kerbal drag by some covering?

As far as I'm aware, KSP does not model airflow obstruction on radially attached parts.

How about a picture to show us what you have?

So I have a lot of variation of Stratzenblitz Laythe ascending craft like this [4:48]

But after some nerfing spark engine (and maybe changing physics) after several patches this craft is not so effective.

So no way?

I'm guessing the large drag you are seeing is either on the seat or the Kerbal.  I do know that a kerbal with deployed chute has the drag and lift applied from their backpack rather than where the chute is.

If you haven't already, I suggest going into the alt-F12 screen and activating Physics>Aero>Display Aero Data in Action Menus.  That way you should be able to get an objective measure of which parts are giving the most drag at any one moment rather than just going by the F12 drag lines.

Cargo bay, service bay

+ Fairings

Especially if you use procedural fairings or tweakscale to create smaller version just around seat this is most light weight solution. Do not forget to equip helmet on launch
