Merging for dummies?

I built a cool little lander.  I'd like to try to fling it at Minimus with one of the ships I've already built.

But.

When I try to merge the two (the one I want to merge does show up in VAB, albeit red) - I cannot get the two models to click together.

 

Is there some sekret sauce for this?

The Re-root tool will be your friend here.

When you merge in a craft, you can only attach it by way of its root part.  Either change the root of to where you want to attach it from and save the craft before merging it in, or use the re-root tool on it after you've merged it.  The re-root tool is up by the translate and rotate buttons.

The sekrit sauce is called the "root part". You can only connect the red ship to your current ship at the red ship's root part.

So: go to the ship you want to merge, select the "reroot" tool, click on the ship, click again on the part that you want to be the attachment point, save it, go back to the other ship, Open with Merge, and the two ships will click together.
