Potato Vegetable Soup a la AHTech Industries

Potato Vegetable Soup a la AHTech Industries:

  • Take a good helping of potatoes (e.g. 1 kg), peel, cut into pieces, add to pot
  • Add water, salt, and some olive oil and set pot to a low boil
  • Take whatever vegetables you have around, peel where need, cut into pieces and sort by time it needs  to boil before being edible.
    • at least some carrots and leek
    • celeriac, onions, and cabbage do well in limited quantities
    • but anything that doesn't become totally horrible when boiled too much will do
  • Add vegetables to pot in intervals according to above list.
  • For the non-vegetarians: add some diced bacon to the pot (usually at the end of the list above)
  • Preferably stop adding stuff to pot before pot is (too) full
  • Stir pot occasionally
  • Boil until everything a semi-homogeneous mass, or you are too hungry and don't want to wait any longer.
  • Season with pepper and/or any spices that you have handy.
  • Serve in a deep bowl
  • Don't forget to switch off the oven when done.

P.S. Yes, AHTech Industries is an engineering company not a five-star restaurant.

Maybe you'd rename your company in AHTech Spartan Industries

No no no no nooooo! No pig leg, blood, or vinegar in my soup! I agree that this is also a variation of the "throw everything in a pot and boil until it stops moving" maxim of cooking, my variation is mostly vegetarian. (And if you need vinegar then add it yourself, preferably where I can't see it.;))

Pig leg and blood may be acceptable as low-impact animal protein ingredients. If it is indeed the case that pig legs and blood are more or less leftovers from the meat industry - i.e. that buying more of that will not influence the number of animals raised and butchered - then I'm all for eating more of that. But a) that would be another recipe and b) I don't know where to get that and how to deal with that. E.g. how do I see if blood has gone bad, can I really boil blood for an indeterminate time without it ruining the soup?

Btw. does anyone here know which parts of animals are essentially leftovers, i.e. not really used for human consumption?

Almost none. If you can't consume it directly, dry, mill, make a powder and use it as a fertilizer or a food for cows and chickens.

From the wikipedia article:

Quote

According to legend, a man from Sybaris, a city in southern Italy infamous for its luxury and gluttony (which gave rise to the word sybarite), after tasting the Spartans' black soup remarked with disgust, "Now I do perceive why it is that Spartan soldiers encounter death so joyfully; dead men require no longer to eat".

Personally I love soup in winter and would like to add to @AHHans's recipe; 1 tablespoon of olive oil and a cup of split yellow peas per 4 liters of soup. You also will need 1 loaf of crusty bread for full effect.

Good point, I had actually added olive oil. What I also forgot - to add to today's soup not to the recipe - was adding sour cream / creme fraiche at the end. Well, it'll keep till next time.

Yellow peas either fall in the category "anything that doesn't become totally horrible when boiled too much" or in the category "not AHTech Industries' soup anymore". When I use peas or lentils or beans I use them instead of the potatoes instead of in addition to them. But maybe I'll try that some time soon.

I know that essentially nothing is thrown away, but that's why I added "for human consumption". I do kind of expect that the parts that are not eaten by humans fetch a lower price than the parts that are. (Although I may be wrong there.) And I was more thinking about the parts that are used for pet (cats and dogs mostly I presume) food, I'm not sure I'll want to eat the parts that are not even used for that.

im more of a chili man myself

take about four pounds of whatever meat you just shot. a pound of bacon, about a dozen serrano peppers, an onion, 3 tablespoons chili powder, a can of green chilis, and a can of kidney beans (beans are a personal preference, most chili makers regard them as a mortal sin). cube the meat, cut the bacon into small pieces, and cut up the onion, throw it into a large skillet and fry the meat in lard until browned. then put it in a slow cooker with the rest of the ingredients. let it sit in the slow cooker all day (for best results set it to 'on'). serve in a bread bowl with a side of tums and a glass of milk*, you are going to need them.

*may be substituted with vodka if you haven't got your ulcer yet. original recipe called for 20 serranos, but that was like eating a nuclear reactor, i figure 12 should be merely face melting. i suppose you can be a wimp and use jalapenos instead.
