Advanced Audacious Aerospace Research Group: MUN 2- This time it counts!

WrdBgRz.png

Well, this is awkward...

Apparently Val should have completed a whole orbit of the Mun for it to count as 'orbiting the Mun'. She's utterly furious at being stuck in a tin can spaceship for nearly 10 days in total when it won't even count for anything, but we still need to do a whole orbit of the Mun with a Kerbal on board, so we cobbled together a rocket with massive overkill delta-V, stuck a Luciole pod on top and Frodo Kerman got baited with more Hobbit jokes then chloroformed bravely volunteered to fly this breakneck Mun mission. Unlike the other missions, which took 4 days to reach the Mun, this one would do it in less than one.

(OOC: And that's despite two separate instances of the orbital trajectory jumping from where it was meant to be- it actually moved the periapsis from 30km for a prograde Mun orbit, to over 2000km for a retrograde Mun orbit!-, forcing course corrections that burned most of the fuel margin away.)

Still, this time we really did it!

  • First Kerbal to ORBIT the Mun: Frodo Kerman in Mun Orbiter 2, achieved after 6 days, 0 hours and 41 minutes. :rep: for real this time!

AAARG's space program has been running for 6 days, 0 hours and 41 minutes. All three crewed Mun missions are now heading home and the Minmus missions are still in flight. We'll make extra-specially sure that we meet ALL the criteria, properly, first time round!

Advanced Audacious Aerospace Research Group: Two down and one in orbit!

WrdBgRz.png

"SҐДLЇЙ'S ӺLЏӺҒҰ SLЇPPԐЯS!"

Valentina was so enraged upon her arrival back on Kerbin that she reverted to her mother tongue, directing a blistering tirade at her rocket, the Board, AAARG in general, the Board, space, the Board, the Mun and the Board.

But first- Dunsey returned to Kerbin after landing on the Mun, making a textbook re-entry and splashing down in the ocean some distance to the south-east of C. McAuliffe launch site. Detailed analysis is being performed on him, his pod and the small pieces of the Mun that he collected, either deliberately or that got stuck in the grooves on his boots. Dunsey is now under observation in his quarantine cell- complete with barred window!

And an hour later, Val returned in Mun Orbiter, still fuming about being denied the status of 'First Kerbal to orbit the Mun'. "They gave Natagard 'First Kerbal to orbit Kerbin', and she didn't do a whole orbit either," she snarled over the radio at one point. Alas, things were only going to get worse: her pod overheated dangerously on re-entry as the heat shield conspicuously failed to shield the pod behind from heat; she had a rough landing on the ground around half way between the KSC and S. Musgrave launch site; and when she tried to plant a flag, as Jeb had done before her, it exploded in her hands due to 'excessive G forces'. A few hours in a nice, comfortable room with padded walls and floor barely put a dent in her rage, but her rage sure put a dent in the room!

In other news, Scan Sat 2 has arrived at Minmus, performing a course correction burn followed by a capture burn to put it into a polar orbit of the little green speck. The burn parameters were adjusted slightly to position it in a higher orbit than initially planned, to maximise the number of scanners in their 'ideal' range. Now that it has captured into orbit, it has become the first Kerbal-made object to orbit Minmus and will soon be joined by an orbiter and a lander. With Mun Orbiter 2 still heading back to Kerbin, Mission Control will be kept busy for a while, and not just by the Board's mission 'ideas' that they scribbled down (in crayon!) during their important Board meetings.

  • Probe in orbit of Minmus: Scan Sat 2, achieved after 9 days, 9 hours and 34 minutes. :rep:

AAARG's space program has been running for 9 days, 9 hours and 34 minutes. The two original Mun missions have now returned to Kerbin and the third is around a day away from re-entry. The Minmus satellite is in orbit and the two crewed missions are rapidly approaching their capture burns.

(OOC: Val's pod was even glitchier than I thought- besides the staging being borked, it actually exploded during re-entry the first time I tried it leaving just the heat shield, but then the game crashed and I had to do it again; second time round I just managed to avoid the overheating, but then the flag exploded in her hands for no reason at all )

Advanced Audacious Aerospace Research Group: MINMUS!

WrdBgRz.png

Another fantastic day at AAARG as we make not one, but TWO major milestones in our Race to Space! Not only that, but we've completed all Phase 2 objectives as well!

Natagard in Minmus Orbiter became the first Kerbal to enter Minmus' SOI and then the first Kerbal to enter orbit of Minmus, AND the first Kerbal to actually complete an orbit of Minmus too! (We haven't told Val this yet as we fear she may have some kind of aneurysm if she finds out in her current state...)

Hilsey in Minmus Lander went one better, first orbiting and then landing on Minmus! Her landing site was chosen with some very strict criteria: it had to be light (the Board insisted), it had to be where Kerbin was visible (the Board really liked the Mun landing photos) and it also had to be on fairly flat ground near the equator, because that's how the orbit worked. As you can see in the images below, we met all three of those criteria.

The following objectives are now complete:

  • First Kerbal to orbit Minmus: Natagard Kerman in Minmus Orbiter, achieved after 9 days, 11 hours and 44 minutes. :rep:
  • First Kerbal to land on Minmus: Hilsey Kerman in Minmus Lander, achieved after 10 days, 4 hours and 29 minutes. :rep:

The Board are running out of superlatives to describe their emotional state at this point. Someone suggested giving them a thesaurus, but they all hid under the table screaming 'The dinos are coming!' and that idea was quickly abandoned. Hilsey and Natagard have a near 10 day trip back to Kerbin ahead of them, but Frodo in Mun Orbiter 2 will be returning in a few hours' time and will be kept well away from Val in case she finds out he got given the 'First Kerbal to orbit the Mun' award instead of her.

AAARG's space program has been running for 10 days, 4 hours and 44 minutes. All Phase 2 milestones are now completed and we have begun planning Phase 3 missions to Eve, Duna and Jool; the next Jool window is in around 3 weeks, so there's plenty of time to launch space stations and surface bases to the Mun and Minmus before then. Due to the planned expansion of our orbital presence, more Kerbals have been hired: Jennie, Nathanael and- amazingly- Buzz.

I'm tempted to just surrender and let @jimmymcgoochie win the rest. He's a monster.

I'm just doing it quickly in real time- it's entirely possible to go faster in game time, and game time is what counts!

Advanced Audacious Aerospace Research Group: Our first failure, and then a success!

WrdBgRz.png

It had to happen sooner or later. The weird overheating bug during Val's Mun Orbiter re-entry aside, we haven't lost a single mission so far.

(OOC: that ship was definitely touched by the Kraken and the pod overheating when it should have been shielded by the heat shield was just one of several problems with it- I direct your attention to the exploding flag at the end of that mission!)

Until now. Our second orbital station, imaginatively named Space Station 2, was launched without a hitch- until the second stage kicked in, and it quickly became apparent that it was woefully underpowered to put the 12 ton space station into orbit. When the rocket reached and passed its apoapsis at 80km, the decision was made to abort the mission.

Jennie, Nathaneal and Buzz were all sitting in the re-entry pod at the front of the lab and so were able to evacuate by simply decoupling the front docking port of the station and firing the deorbiting thrusters on the pod, pushing them clear as the rest of the rocket began to break up and burn up. All three were recovered safe and sound shortly afterwards, however the station was completely destroyed.

Determined to succeed, a second station was constructed- Space Station 2 v2, for some reason, rather than Space Station 3- with the first stage Vectors replaced by more powerful Mastodons and the second stage completely redone; instead of a trio of Pavonis cryo engines burning liquid methane, which was a high efficiency but low thrust option that ultimately lacked the thrust to make orbit, the second stage was given a single Rhino engine and considerably more thrust at the expense of delta-V.

There was still plenty of fuel to make LKO, but future Mun and Minmus stations will need a design re-think as the original design was meant to complete the Mun and Minmus station objectives as well. Due to me not checking before launch the original crew still being in the sea waiting to be picked up by the Coastguard, a new crew of Jeb, Bill and Bob went up on Space Station 2 v2.

One important objective was completed by these two missions:

  • a second, larger station has been deployed to Kerbin orbit. :rep:

AAARG's space program has been running for 10 days, 5 hours and 5 minutes. Six Kerbals are in space- two leaving Minmus on return trajectories to Kerbin, one about to re-enter from the Mun and three in the new station. Further stations are planned around the Mun and Minmus, but a different launch rocket will be required to get them there. This might involve even bigger parts than the current 5m Kerbodyne S4 series, and the Board is currently in talks with Post-Kerbin Mining to get hold of some 7.5m rocket parts to bring our Launch Vehicles into the Near Future.

dang! I only get half an hour each night. :(

Maybe we could set up hours set only for KSP during the day, and during that time, we can work on the JNSQ race. Like maybe each day, excluding a day where someone is busy. We play on the save from 5:00 to 6:00.

That wouldn't be convenient. We all live in different time zones
