Must New Versions of KSP be purchased at full price?

I bought KSP earlier this summer and downloaded 1.9.1 directly through the free  version.  Now I see 10.1 is listed on Curse?  Can I get such upgrades without paying $40.00 for another full game download?

Welcome to the forum @StephenMZ, the upgrade to 1.10 is free however the method of upgrade differs depending on where you purchased the game.

Hi @StephenMZ, where did you get the game from? Steam should update automatically, but if you got it from the KSP Store, it's a little different, as James said.

I bought KSP directly from the developers through the free version, earlier this year.I did not use Steam, though I considered it.  I did not want to subscribe to a service, just buy and play..  What should I do to update?

In that case you can go to the KSP store, login to your account and download the latest version.

OK, great.  I've tried to log n earlier today, but claims my email or password is incorrect.  I will try again.

You can just go to your account on kerbalspaceprogram.com and then click download again. DO NOT MOVE THE FILE!!!!! I can not stress this enough, it will only make things harder

No it doesn't.  It's very common and an easy to do.  Moving the downloadable zip, and the installed game, to allow for multiple custom installs is a very common practice.
