I made a suspension system for my mining drills

Recommended Posts

I did a search to see if this solution had been discussed before or was standard practice, and I can't really find any evidence that anyone else suffers the problem it's meant to solve.

So first I'll ask - does the mining drill violently shake the vehicle that it's attached to for everyone? or is it just me?

Anyways - I just built my first mining rig a few days ago and had this issue with it getting lifted up by the drills like they were stilts and then getting rocked all over while it was operating. Not really to the detriment of this particular piece of equipment, but certainly a concern if I was going to start building more elaborate surface outposts in the future.

So I came up with this using the robotic parts. It is very simple, only consists of a hydraulic cylinder and hinge that both have the motor removed. It worked well on the runway test, but on the surface of Minmus it is more effective than I had hoped. It's so effective that I actually miss having more animation in the vehicle.

Here is a GIF comparing the old mining rig to the new one (is there a way to embed on this forum?) - https://gfycat.com/infamouscheerykitfox

It's doing that because the drill heads are too close to the surface. If you can mount the drill bodies higher, it will automatically reduce the bounce.

Really neat solution for a super low profile mounting, though.
