Time in career mode

Is there a point to doing things faster (in less years) in career mode? For interplanetary missions you cannot really work around waiting for transfer windows so that is a big time sink. Careful advance planning for all missions could help, but gives me headaches, and I want to know if it the game cares how much time you use. Of course I may treat it as a challenge - colonize the whole system in X years - but not interested at the moment.

Contacts require completion by a certain deadline.  So just be aware of that and not let the time expire without completion or you'll take a hit in lost funds and reputation.
