Bucky's car used rear wheel steering, front wheel drive (with the engine mounted in the rear), the exact opposite of anything since.  Doubt it help much with savings, the whole thing was hand crafted by some serious mechanics/craftsmen, but presumably Ford or similar could take most of the design (layout, streamlining) and build an advanced car for a reasonable price.  I suspect trying to figure out the steering during a test drive would kill sales if anyone made one now.
