In memoriam: Vladimir Komarov

It's early April 8, 2022, as I'm typing this local time. On April 24, 1967, the first astronaut to die as a result of manned spaceflight crashed into the ground at 03.22.52 GMT, 3 kilometers west of Karabutak, USSR.

Vladimir Komarov was killed on impact. His last recorded words were "Thank you for transmitting all of that. [Separation] occurred. [garbled]."

Seconds to minutes later, Soyuz 1's return module impacted Earth at 140 kilometers per hour. The main parachute did not unfold properly. The base of the capsule had burned through. Komarov's body was a charred lump of carbon.

Rest in peace, Vladimir Komarov.

Прощайте.
