Wrong drive usage

Recommended Posts

I'm having an issue where whenever I start KSP (or on loading screens) it starts using the wrong drive; KSP is installed on my SSD, disk 2, but task manager says that it's transferring on my HDD, disk 1. This has been happening to the point where it takes over half an hour to load a save file.

I've tried using a few different disk analysis tools to see where it's reading from but nothing shows up.

Also, I have over 100 mods installed so reinstalling isn't exactly possible.

I'll assume you are on KSP 1.12.1 or newer, Windows 10 or newer. My first guess is that you are low on RAM for the number of mods you have, and your Windows swap file is on the HDD. That's just a guess based on very limited info.

Have you had your KSP setup for a while and was it working well before? Or is this a brand new set of mods for you?

Have you made any recent changes to your PC?

Share your log file by putting it on a file sharing service then post the link. The log contains many details about KSP's startup steps. The thread below provides more detail.

I had a feeling that RAM was the issue. I only have 8 GB but I feel like that should be enough.

I have recently moved my KSP setup from Disk 1 (HDD) to Disk 2 (SSD), but I wasn't having this issue before. I've been adding mods as I go along, hoping that they aren't incompatible.

Yes, Disk 2 was recently installed and I moved KSP onto it.

Several players and mod makers have reported drive path problems caused by the KSP 1.12.4 launcher. Search other threads for how to bypass the launcher. Maybe that will fix your problem.

If your problem continues without the launcher, please clarify your sequence of events. You've mentioned changing drives and adding mods; it's unclear exactly what order. Is this what you did?

  1. Already had KSP 1.12.4 and some mods on your hard drive. The game was working and stable.
  2. Installed new SSD and copied KSP and mods to the new drive. Game was working ok and had much faster startup?
  3. Added more mods, HDD started thrashing. You might have too many mods for 8 GB, or you added a mod that breaks KSP 1.12.4. Remove the last few mods you added and retest, then change mods one at a time to find the breaking point.

Adding mods, especially if you have a current playthrough going, can be risky. For future reference I suggest copying your entire KSP folder before making substantial mod changes. I realize that doesn't help you now.
