Can I use A.I.R.B.R.A.KE.S on Kerbin?

Recommended Posts

I find I can safely use them  when returning from LKO, say from a 120X120 km orbit.  As @king of nowhere stated, they do have a heat limit.  Trying to use them at 3,000 m/s (returning from Minmus perhaps) will probably cause them to overheat.

I just need a fast way to slow down my supersonic cargo planes.

Try loading the wings by pulling more G’s.  The higher your load factor, the more drag you’ll generate.   If you are already on the path you want, try doing S-turns.  Roll 90 degrees to the left, pull up hard, roll 90 degrees right, pull up hard.  Repeat as needed.

Up high (say above 30 km) you can pull as much as you want, I usually stop at 45 degrees angle of attack to limit adverse aerodynamic effects.  Down lower in the atmosphere you will need to be careful about reaching too high of a load factor.  Beyond 9 G’s you are in danger of big parts of your plane falling off- like the wings.

Loading up the wings is much more effective than the air brakes, although they do work too.

Any aerodynamic surface will provide a braking force when deployed. Using large control surfaces as airbrakes is more effective and by doubling up their functions (control and braking) you get two parts in one. Just make sure that you don’t set all your surfaces to deploy in the same direction as this can cause major control/stability issues, set some to deploy up and others down to balance the forces.
