This may sound strange, #car/design/race challenge.

Ok, This may sound crazy but I want to work with some gearheads on building the perfect stock (unmodded) racecar.

We are going to design the perfect rally car and then we are going to race THAT rally car against each other.

How we do this ?

We wil share our base design and all work on improving it.

First step will be the base.

I will start with sharing a simple base and we will use it to improve it.

Everything is possible, everything about this base can be changed just as long as you improve it.

We will use this thread to share our ideas and try to make the best car we can make, discussions will be hot but we will all have the same goal: build the perfect car for a rally.

So I need gearheads, let me know if you are interested.

Don't start with building a complete car, we best start with ballance and the engine.

Are you up for this ?

So we build anything from this base part?

ill take a crack at it

You don't even have to use that, I just want a perfect 2 seater rally car that we can build to perfect with other gearheads.

It is all about innovation.

In short: we build a  non modded racecar together, race it against each other (with RACES! mod) And keep trying to improve it.

I have an idea:

P2P_001.png

Two seats, top speed 51 m/s, does not flip easily (except when attempting very sharp turns when going very fast).

Technical info:

Spoiler

P2P_002.png

The rover has 14 RTGs and eight batteries, it can produce 11.2 EC/s and hold 1700, and thus can drive by day and by night, without needing to stop to recharge.
It also has a parachute in case the brakes can't slow it down.
All this is attached to the nodes of an engine plate to avoid drag (if an engine plate has anything attached to its bottom, then whatever is attached to the nodes inside it is shielded from drag, whatever its size is); batteries are attached to the nodes from "quad" and "4x1", and the RTGs are attached to those from "6x1" and "8x1".

Everything nicely offset(t?)ed

Plus a reaction wheel, in case it's needed, deactivated by default (can be activated by an action group).

The engine plate is offset(t?)ed into the rover body, so that it looks better. I added two lights for night travel.

It is currently at the south pole, it works as well as on the runway.

(Val seems to enjoy the lithobraking)

(even if it doesn't look like a rally "car" lol)

its a little unconventional... but it can soak up rough terrain and big jumps and its faster than anything wheel-powered. ive since refined the design to do over 100m/s and take impacts better. ive never shared a craft file so ill figure out kerbalx later if anyone wants to mess with this thing

How is the handling?

And also, acceleration needs work... It's absolutely amazing once it gets going, but it seems to take a while to get there.

I keep having trouble designing a simple rover that doesn't flip...

Maybe I should build a tank. :D

It's okay for the base - it can be tuned out later once we start adding parts.

handling is... interesting. anything more than parking lot speeds, you deactivate wheel steering all together and steer it with aero. using wheel steering is too twitchy. you can increase the tire grip to corner faster but risk rolling. its really meant for long distance high speed cruising. new version accelerates a bit faster
