SOI Entry and Exit Ripples

Recommended Posts

I get so confused knowing where I'm going to enter a SOI. I get confused every time with or without the new "ripples" showing entry and exit.

Unfortunately, my brain always goes to [ripples going in means that's where I go in] and when ripples go out, that's when I exit, right?

No... it's more like a pond, where throwing a rock in causes the ripples to go out, and when the rock exits the water again, the water follows and ripples gravitate toward the rocks center of mass...

This is the metaphor I have to try and remember because these SOI indicators are not intuitive, and they kinda clutter navigation.

They are pretty, and more appealing than more text on the screen, but maybe green for entry, red for exit? Maybe and arrow would be nice?

I think eventually I'll get over it, but it's a new change that keeps causing me some extra dv to correct my orbits on entry to an SOI, so I thought to share.

I too tend to get confused by the ripples when there's nothing else in view to give me the right context. An arrow showing the direction of travel at SoI edge would really help, I think. They might also help to speed up learning the meaning of the ripples without needing other context.

The ripples are OK. Color code them and make them really much, much smaller! So small, they actually look like a textured fat dot. Not more.

How the current thing was designed is beyond me. On the one hand you have minimalistic orbits with small dots, on the other hand that ugly, huge ripple-cone thing, dominating everything. Weird...

I'm not particularly against the ripples, I quite like them to show your trajectory in a 3d space like on the SOI.

However, I agree that the enter and exit is quite confusing and I would like to see something like this:

Or with simple icons:
