Radially Attached Tanks Rotate Around Attachment Point, Not Center Of Tank

Recommended Posts

When building a rocket in the VAB, I like to be able to rotate tanks so that parts line up nicely with one another (especially when you have adapters from one size to the next, as an example).  Unfortunately, tanks rotate along the attachment point, instead of along the center of the tank.  Steps to reproduce:

  1. Start building a rocket, with a command module and a fuel tank
  2. Grab a second fuel tank and move it so that you would attach it radially to the tank from step 1
  3. Rotate the tank by hitting E/Q

You will see that the tank rotates along the point where it would attach to the center column, as opposed to rotating around its own center axis.  It is confirmed that attaching the tank radially and using the translate tool to rotate also exhibits this behavior.

I'm not in the game but have you tried pulling the tank out of the part picker, placing it in the workspace, rotate there, apply the rotation (by putting it down again) and then attaching to the rest of the ship? I don't know what the outcome might be but I'm almost sure you can do that in some way.

Nope.  Tried that this morning and it didn't work.  The issue is that the object rotates around the attachment point, and not the center axis.  So no matter where you set it down, it rotates on its edge.
