Farings - Bug (or am I doing it wrong) -- ForScience!

Created a craft to do the ForScience mission of 'Orbit the Mun' with a Crew Module and a Relay Sat attached.  Because the relay sat wasn't aerodynamic, I built a faring.

...which worked the first time; but I needed to add a few things (power, power storage, antennas) after I built the faring so I deleted it and tried to start over.

No matter what I tried - every time I'd hit the check mark to complete the faring the second time, it disappeared.  Nothing I tried would complete the faring.

What am I missing?

The only time this happened to me, I *THINK* the problem was the fairing base was clipping into the decoupler I had immediately over it.

Starting the fairing straight out with no vertical component allowed me to make the fairing.
