The DEVs talked about space races being a thing in multiplayer in an interview once. They said that there will be an competitive mode (everyone separate agency) and a mode for working together (as one space agency) in multiplayer

Yes, now I assume you can cooperate even in completive mode but its not default and stuff like science is not shared unless you actively share it like letting another sides kerbal enter your ship to get copy of science. 
Working together let one fly the carrier and the other the spaceplane it drops :)

From what I took away from interviews that I saw with the devs, I dont think they were talking about specific game modes rather than just playstyles that they assume the community would partake in. They were saying in multiplayer you would have the option of trying to grow your agency faster than others or to share resources to try to grow your agencies together.

Reading your comment, a scene popped up in my mind: a scene ala The Expanse, where a player would do a hard deceleration burn towards another player's spacecraft in deep space, then jumping on EVA at high velocity to reach it and copy the science, and returning to its own ship before the other player could react... And then burning hard toward Kerbin before the adversary could launch a conter-mission to stop the science-pirate kerbal...

Competitiveness in KSP could lead to very interesting interactions :D

This one being the old guy who did that long ago, bu not so long ago I had it written on the wall of my tomb  in hieroglyphic.

Short version, I was to rescue an kerbal who manage to be in retrograde orbit between Dress and Jool. This was the tool. 
But I made an mistake kerbal only had 100 days of life support. So I made an trajectory who would intercept kerbin in 95 days but at 7 km/s. 
And the tool above solved the problem just launch another intercept have kerbal transfer and deorbit. 

With 18K dv most orbital problems are simple unless interstellar. 
KSP 2 I'm  not even trying

yes, but heating from that engine and also recources aren't added yet.
