Niven new dust storm

Enhance your Galileo's Planet Pack experience bringing it up to date with the latest planet packs, adding stunning volumetric clouds, updated Scatterer configs, new atmosphere colors, and unique weather effects to gas giants and other celestial bodies! This mod introduces layered, color-mapped clouds, lightning, cyclones, auroras, red sprites with special lightning sounds and textures and more. This is a personal take on how the planets should look, feel free to use the old configs. The atmospheres have been designed with new colors and unique weather effects based on information from the GPP wiki and the help of Gemini to give it some realistic but interesting look.

Features

  • Layered clouds on gas giants with underworld support
  • Color-mapped volumetric clouds
  • Atmospheric effects such as lightning, cyclones, and red sprites (WIP)
  • Updated Scatterer configs
  • New atmosphere colors based on the planet's atmo composition from GPP wiki.
  • Cryovolcanic geysers on some moons of Nero

What's changed?

Spoiler
  • Gave Niven a more yellow-ish atmosphere
  • Tellumo now has a more dense atmosphere (visually) and gave it a more light blue color and more intense Rayleigh dispersion
  • Gratian has a more blue-ish and pale atmosphere, like an icy planet
  • Augustus is now pale blue
  • Catullus isn't a Eve clone anymore, more of a mini gas giant
  • Tarsiss now has a higher atmosphere and gave it a mini storm circling the north pole
  • Hadrian it's a pale blue-green mud ball with pink-ish puffy clouds

Great job, I've been waiting for this for a looong time! Thanks!

I guess its not compatible with rescaling the GPP system (with a built-in config)?

It is!!!!  Just not compatible with GPP secondary atm, Gael needs a patch

V1 is out and what's next!!

This will be my last update for now, run out of ideas and I think every planet that should be covered is covered, I'm still open to suggestions tho. Parallax support is next.

What's new:

Spoiler

  • Added Hurricanes to Tellumo

    screenshot27
    screenshot28

  • Reworked Tarsiss clouds with a new cloud texture
    screenshot30

  • Changed Hadrian clouds a little
    screenshot32

  • Added a seasonal cloud layer to Gael, appears every 120 days with storms and red sprites

Only bug that's still persisting is Tarsiss with it's black clouds, don't know what's going on there

Whoa, parallax support is next?! Thats awesome!

I played GPP a few years ago and liked it a lot. Its very cool to see that GPP gets some love again - especially in terms of updated graphics.

Thanks for your work! It makes me willing to play GPP next when I finish my current JNSQ playthrough. :)

Parallax is pretty much done, I've done it using Parallax Continued because is expected to be out by April for free, so I didn't see the need to make configs for v2 for now

Gael having atmospheric sprites seasonally is epic and i wish more mods had that feature

Did a small update because they were broken, update if you aren't on 1.0.1

Will parallax configs support rescaling as well? AFAIK Parallax only needs biome data (as well as textures, props, etc) and doesn't really care about scale but I might be wrong.

Also a quick question: sorry if I missed something in this thread, but have you happen to lower the hazbody sphere so fellow kerbonauts can fancy multiple beautiful cloud layers inside the gas giants? For example, in a similar JNSQ config for volumetric clouds the hazbody sphere starts to punch at like ~12km above the sea level for Lindor (a gas giant). At this altitude one can only start observing the lower clouds. From 12km to like 50km you only fly inside clouds so nothing can be really seen (apart from giant cyclones if you happen to fly inside one). Its like the true beauty of gas giants is always hidden below... cheats I guess, otherwise you cant really withstand the heat and simply blow up no matter what you do.
EDIT: nevermind, I'm a blind idiot. The answer is literally a few posts above.

I've just tried it and what I noticed is that many clouds are seen through others. But my volumetrics are a bit old though - dated June 2024 I think (v4). Probably its the latest version though. Is it a known issue or its an issue on my end? If so, I'll debug it myself then. Just gotta know if its really a config bug or an incompatibility on my end.
EDIT2: alright, I'm experiencing a lot of issues now with or without proper GPP rescale. For example, Gauss doesn't have clouds at all (Otho is fine for example and its quite beautiful!), Tellumo's atmosphere and water are not rendered with Scatterer, rings cause visual glitches, etc etc. Its probably on my end (GPP installed from CKAN, the clouds cfg file is removed as per instructions, Kopernicus cache is deleted after installing or removing rescale). I'll debug later then.

Thanks again! Its great to hear parallax support is pretty much done!

As far as I know, is a volumetrics issue, had that on stock configs as well, there is a workaround, can you tell me where it's happening? I think I can at least try to fix it.

Well, I can say that pretty much all errors are because of my mistake :), I'll check Gauss, I know what's happening.  Tellumo's atmo and ocean can't tell, check log and try to see, also check in GPP_Scatter folder if the patch files are there, maybe I forgot them idk.

EDIT: download this and replace it on GPP Volumetrics/Config folder and Gauss should be fixed

Thanks for helping on debugging

@Yukkine Alright, I took a few screenshots to help to reproduce the issues.

Cloud clipping is easily seen if you get closer to the volcano near the KSC. (Also there is more clipping of different layers of clouds when flying across Gael, I didn't shoot those as they are quite similar. Tell me if you need more shots.)

Spoiler

BOKNOQd.jpeg

Now. I've replaced the file you gave me and Gauss now does have clouds. They look quite scary though, haha! Also atmosphere seems to be absent (thats why its scary I guess, lol).

Spoiler

Zvr0LDJ.png

Tellumo rings clipping as seen from orbit (the atmosphere disappears near the center of the pic - thats the ring clipping):
I'm not really sure its the issue with your config though as neither Scatterer nor Volumetrics are responsible for rings. But atmosphere is the default KSP one, not the Scatterer one though.

Spoiler

KeMVQgN.jpeg

More Tellumo from the surface.
Notice the water: it seems Scatterer is not applied here. The water and the atmosphere are rendered with default KSP methods. Also clouds look quite tiled.

Spoiler

Now to not sound complaint or whining... Catullus looks quite brilliant (although cloud colors differ from what is seen on the Scaled space model)! And I'm still daaamn impressed by brown and pink Otho vibes!

Thats synthwave baby!
Ye its another "craft with lightning" screenshot... But daym I love it!

Spoiler

CJEXTtf.png

Also I've checked the scatterer config as you asked. Seems fine to me. At least Kerbin... I mean Gael is very much fine.

By the way, may I ask you to show me how Tellumo looks on your side please?

I see, yeah it looks damm horrible, disable it for now if you want, gonna try to fix it

Rings clipping trough atmospheres is normal as far as I remember, it's a limitation, gonna check anyway in a few min and edit this post with a picture on my side

can you check this folder GPP\GPP_Scatterer\Planets\Tellumo and tell me how many files do you have in there, there should be 4 and a folder.

Gonna check this too, pretty sure it's a mistake from my side

On this note, Gael must be working fine because is internally named Kerbin, so it's using the stock configs

I'm gonna try a clean install and see, maybe there is something I forgot to mention on the install instructions. Really appreciate the feedback, it's my first time modding and some criticism is appreciated

Yeah, it seems ok.
Do you use the volumetric version of Scatterer?

Hey Yukkine!

Thanks for crediting me (I believe for the textures?). But I've noticed a few things:

- You've used some of my configs
- Your mod description is almost identical to mine
- Aye, I even found a file path still pointing to my mod! (https://imgur.com/rktHo22)

Since my work's under CC-BY-NC-SA 4.0, here's what needs fixing:

- Could you give me a mention for the configs too? 'Gauss Clouds' isn't too clear... I don't know what I'm being credited for exactly. (this is pretty much just a nitpick, but the license is the big deal)
- Since my stuff's CC-BY-NC-SA 4.0, your mod should be too to stay compliant.

A few suggestions:

- You forgot to rename one of your lightning configs.  You should probably change this for clarity. (https://imgur.com/4UNKATu)
- The description. It's pretty much 1 to 1 with JNSQVolumetrics, you just swapped the names. I reckon mod pages should try to be unique, I'd appreciate it if you rewrote it.
- My scaledFade settings (most of the configs I checked match mine) are for 2.7x scale, which might be too much for stock scale. You should probably consider adjusting these values, aye?
- I also noticed your mod points to textures that don’t exist. The original config was referencing JNSQ’s Duna texture, you just changed the file path. This effectively does nothing, as there isn't a texture called Duna00. (https://imgur.com/xydqmuO)
- Using textures I made specifically for JNSQ (like DunaDust.png) will make your planet look like JNSQ's Duna. Probably not what you want.

I'd appreciate it if you could sort these out.

Cheers!

Thank you for reaching out, and I appreciate your feedback regarding my use of your work. I apologize for any oversights on my part, and I value the effort you put into your creations.  I'm pretty much new to this modding stuff and didn't know how to credit stuff accordingly. I'll fix this.

Addressing  each one of your suggestions:

  • I thought that if I didn't change the name it'll be obvious that is yours, so to do things right, I should change the name and give you credit for it right?
  • Yeah description was pretty much copy paste by me, I'll try to be more creative, used yours bc loved your work and GPP and JNSQ are from the same team and idk, made sense to me
  • scaleFade configs was pretty much on purpose, does that need credit too?
  • I'll check the Duna texture, again, I was just trying to do something like you did for JNSQ but on GPP
  • And you're right, is not what I wanted, I'll try to redo the hole thing to be more unique

Thanks for letting me know what I did wrong so kindly, but I tried asking for help and didn't get much of an answer, so the next best way to learn is to screw things up ig.

Heya!

Glad you're on board with sorting this out.

Don't sweat the small stuff. A simple "some configs from jnsqvolumetrics" is more than enough. No need to detail every config. But do remember, since my mod is under CC-BY-NC-SA 4.0, yours needs to be licensed the same way.

Change 'em if it helps, or keep 'em if you like - up to you, really. I'm cool either way.

Hey, just give the description a little personal touch to make it your own. Keep the spirit, but add your flair.

7 hours ago, Yukkine said:

Again, just a general nod is all that's needed. No need to list out each one.

Yeah, that texture was tailored for JNSQ's Duna. If you use it elsewhere, you're just going to get a Duna lookalike.

Totally with you there - we've all been there, learning by doing (and maybe undoing). If you're stuck or need any advice, feel free to reach out. I'm here to help!

Cheers!
