I'd think, among getting multiplayer to run smoothly and integrating colonies smoothly into the game (as well as many other important features for colonies like automated milk runs), UI would be the smaller of these challenges. Creating new UI windows is quite easy to do yes, it's the modification of existing UI windows from the stock game that is quite difficult to do. One option could be to rebuild everything from scratch in order to be able to easily modify stuff, but that'd be a lot of work.

Would it be harder than adding colonies, resource management, interstellar travel, multiplayer, all that? I'm also curious how colonies are going to work - "the project's ultimate goal is to bring in the long-promised features and milestones that never came to be" is a massive promise to make. Yes, recreating existing UI is more work than tacking on new UI for the missing features. Option A: Ignore existing UI + add new UI = no work + a lot of work = a lot of work Option B: Rewrite existing UI + add new UI = a lot of work + a lot of work = an absolute buttload of work In a perfect world, option B wins, of course: the existing UI is less than ideal and it'd be nice to have total consistency between the existing and new UIs. But the team is first and foremost concerned with practicality, hence limiting the scope of the project to option A. And, to directly address your point - regardless of which option is better, it should be obvious that option B is indeed harder than option A. Remember, nothing's stopping another ambitious modder or mod team from rewriting the existing UI themselves. The Redux team has simply declared it out-of-scope for Redux specifically. Just to be clear: I'm not asking if redoing all the UI would be harder than tacking on new UI for colonies/resources/interstellar/multiplayer. I'm asking if redoing all the UI would be harder than implementing colonies/resources/interstellar/multiplayer.
