I would guess it's the sides of the new helmet. Does it remind you of the Mark VI helmet? It reminded me of the marine's helmets from Halo 3 at first glance.

Kerbals don't have individual teeth,

They have two large semi-circle peices of bone in their mouth for chewing things.

not everything has to be based off the game completely you can use some creativity, also they have individual teeth in Riess's image
