KSP Grandmaster! (Land on every body of the Kerbal System!)

Recommended Posts

I don't know about stickying yet, but you guys could, you know, rate this thread so people know it's a good challenge :)

And rather than having lots of stickies I'd prefer a thread that linked to the top 100 challenges maybe (hint hint)

how do you rate a thread?

good question, I just realized the thread rating system doesn't exist anymore: is this because of the forum purge?

also, another thing that has disappeared is the reputation tab on the user CP.

Must try this. Might take a while though. Done the easy already (kerbin, mun, minmus, duna, eve) although didn`t start taking screenshots until after I had been to Mun and Eve but it is easy enough to go back. Will there be a grandmaster badge or something for a grandmasters sig?

Will post results in a while...

I should do this. Given that I never bring anyone home, I'm already over halfway done!

I have Kerbals on Eve, Duna, Ike, Minmus, Mun, Laythe, Bop and Vall.

I have a lander orbiting Moho already, just haven't bothered to land.

I have a station around Dres.

The only time I decided to return to Kerbin was my Eeloo mission, after landing, so I'd need to get someone back there.

I`ve decided to make a stock single Kerbal lander that will go anywhere in the system just for the challenge. It was basically just a huge probe with a kerbal in the nose. I made V1.0 to get into LKO with 7000m/s Dv (2000 on the lander) thinking that would be more than enough and it was not. Tylo, Moho and Eeloo either need a better pilot than me or more Dv so I made V2.0 which through judicious use of extra boosters and shaving off of some weight now has an extra 1500 Dv giving ~8500 Dv to play with once in LKO(75Km). Tylo 2 has landed and now I just need to relaunch GM Moho 2 and wait for GM Eeloo 2 to get to the outer system. GM Gilly and GM Vall are on course for SOI and I`m doing the rest of the Jool burns tonight.

Update for me

Moho

Eve *Done*

Gilly *SOI*

Kerbin *Done*

Duna *Done*

Ike *Done*

Dres

Laythe *Done*

Vall *SOI*

Tylo *Done*

Bop

Pol

Eeloo

Having trouble with Moho, Tylo was a real pain and Eeloo will take years (in game). Duna and Eve were easy, just aim for the edge of it and deploy the parachutes (as long as you hit some land). Laythe was only tricky because there wasn`t much land...

I reckon I might get it done this week.

What does SOI mean?

What does SOI mean?

SOI=Sphere of Influence, it`s the range of influence of a planets gravity. You can only orbit a body within its sphere of influence as far as I know. (at least within the game)

I found out the hard way that the mountains on some of the Jool moons are over 15Km high (by trying to orbit at 15km), Bop I think.

Only Pol to go.

Then I suppose I`ll have to do it all again with flags.....

Finally done it. Some late nights and early mornings (and all day in between sometimes), lots of quicksaving, immense help from alarm clock mod (assumed was ok, doesn`t control anything, just lets you set a maneuver node, go to a different ship and not lose the node and has a list of what event is next with alarms) and lots of coffee.

Here are my Brave, never to return, Kerbals who in the name of me, decided to go to a far flung body of the system, take a picture and send it back.

They went to Moho,

There was a very quick and scary launch to Kerbin

And Finally Eeloo

Here is my craft. I borrowed the launcher from Molab IV and added a few nuclear engines to an orange tank and a basic lander that should be able to land anywhere in the system. Except for a couple of places where I had to keep the nuclear engines running almost into the ground (I`m looking at you Moho, Tylo and Eeloo) before dropping them it had plenty of Delta-V. It was a case of No no no no no no no when I discovered the over 15km mountains on bop but that was most of the drama. It has a few parachutes and a couple of engines for where the parachutes aren`t enough or you need to lose some speed before deploying. Plenty of RCS for lateral adjustment on landing (Although the RCS placement needs looking at)

It likes to get a bit of height before gravity turn and a bit of RCS to turn when you need to adjust your orbit at Pe. You should have about 8500Dv at 75Km LKO (more if you are careful or lose some RCS from the tank on the launchpad)lander 2-2.5k Dv + nuclear ~5000Dv +1000 last launch stage

Most places you don`t need to be careful with your burns.

wo nice job! you are a Grandmaster!

Thank you!

I`m glad you posted the challenge. I am not sure I would have explored the system so fully so quickly if it was not for you. I only got the game six weeks ago but I have not loaded another game onto my PC since the first day I loaded KSP.

I think I did it. Tell me if I missed any. No mods, no clipping, no debug, no quicksave completely pure tour around every celestial body
