Rovers?

Recommended Posts

I need help building one >_> Not that I can't just glue wheels on and say go, but I find that I can't make a design that I like. I'm not sure how everyone can get the structural pannels to clip on edges rather than the center point, but I can't seem to, so whatever I make looks like a steel-frame abortion of logic.

If anyone has pretty rover designs - and doesn't mind someone trying to mimic aspects of it - please let me see them :3

Making use of the B-9 and Firespitter cockpits:

Fuel-carrying variant of the passenger rover in the above image:

Kinda view this one as more of a relocatable habitation station than a rover, as the current design iteration doesn't have the power generation for significant-range travel.

One thing I've found that helps with placing panels edge-on is to turn off the angle snap. Otherwise, the game tries to do silly things with them. Another thing that helps is experimenting with the QWEASD rotational controls in the VAB, if you don't know about them already (and holding down "Shift" for fine-tuning).

My own designs tend to be a bit minimalist:

(Had a small accident while landing the "box" rover. It's a long story.)

Here's what I call the LEAFA rover. Originally it was meant for exploring mun artifacts, but it ended up being such a successful design that I used it on Duna as well for easter egg hunting.

The rover itself is only 0.52 tons, and has the legs on the lander set exactly right so that in reduced gravity environments the lander is able to pick the rover up again to carry it to other target areas.

In practice though I've not managed to land one with enough fuel in it to reach another site, so I just dock the rover with the lander as a parking garage for it when not in use.

I definitely don't have the best but here's some pictures then, I was inspired by other people so maybe I can do the same for you.

This one is still in testing, found some fatal flaws. I recommend HIGHLY testing your creations on Kerbin, but remember they will behave quite differently out in space.

This one I actually brought to the moon and had a blast! Sadly it was solar powered, and I broke them so now it's just sitting in a crater on the Mun. Comes complete with roll bars and self righting system! The second photo is of the delivery system in case you wondered how you get it there in the first place. My Solo Personnel Insertion Kits (SPIK) can take a single Kerbonaut, Rover and self-contained delivery vehicle to Mun and back. It can reach other planets, but it won't come home.
