First Kerbal on Minmus, first Kerbol orbit, first unmanned probe to Eve! Big day for Kerbal kind!! Think I might finally be getting the hang of this! Though my probe design needs a bit of work. Screenshots when my probes are prettier and more useful ;)

Advice: Never ask Jeb what he wants to build next. Or this can happen:

<a href="http://www.imagehosting.cz/?v=screenkkk.png"><img src="http://www.imagehosting.cz/thumbs/screenkkk.png" border="0"></a> <a href="http://www.imagehosting.cz/?v=screenctc.png"><img src="http://www.imagehosting.cz/thumbs/screenctc.png" border="0"></a> <a href="http://www.imagehosting.cz/?v=screenfyf.png"><img src="http://www.imagehosting.cz/thumbs/screenfyf.png" border="0"></a>

Apparently Jeb saw Pacific Rim and concluded that KSP needs a Jaeger program...

Today, I managed to get into orbit around Minmus (which I've never done before) and, thanks to my recently-acquired MechJeb, even land on it (somewhat awkwardly, I might add - due to not having landing legs or any stabilising feature, my rocket managed to fall on its side). Richford Kerman explored the surface for a bit and put a flag on the landing site. Despite the fact that the whole rocket was on its side, I used Minmus' very low gravity to my advantage and was able to use the surface as a runway, eventually getting back into orbit. Surprisingly enough, I still had enough delta-v to transfer back to Kerbin and even position myself for a landing. However it was only then did I realise I made the rather unfortunate mistake of not including parachutes in my spacecraft and I did not have enough fuel left to fire my retrorockets, so everyone crashed and died.

Thank goodness for quick saving before landing on Minmus, I guess. :D

In the end, I might not have actually landed on Minmus (paradoxically speaking, of course), but at least I successfully got my Kerbals to Minmus orbit and back. Which I guess is quite something.

Tried 6 new designs, I'm trying to get to the mun and back (one way is no problem just never have enough fuel to get all the way back) every one of them failed most quite spectacularly, it's frustrating yet addicting at the same time...if I add 3 more boosters and a bunch of support beams... At least Jeb survived about half of them. My favorite was when the ship went into a spectacular spin, separation was impossible, and finally smacked right into rocket hanger, I don't think just Jeb died in that one. BTW do Kerbals live underground?

Chizbro...are you in sandbox or career mode? I'm thinking of going back to sandbox the limits on my tech are hurting me I probably shouldn't have gone even on them and tried for more advanced science things.

When did Moho get so interesting? Just send a probe to the surface as I had only ever been in low orbit and found one of the most interesting surface in the game.

Fah. Tell that to my poor spaceplane pilot who tried to take off from there the other day... (no prizes for guessing; turned out the LV-N was too weak to get the plane above the hills in time due to the angle)

A refueling tanker makes a rendezvous with the Euryale 23-D Merry Go Round in orbit above Moho.

The plan is for the Merry Go Round to head to Gilly, then back to Kerbin orbit where it'll pick up a Science Module / Hab, a heavy lander and an extra fuel tank before zooming off for a not-so-Grand Tour.

Built my THIRD gantry crane design in the last 24 hours...

(The first was over 50 meters tall)

Integrated the 25 meter version with my Mun base...

Considering rebuilding my resource cache on the Mun to lower the polygon count...

Generated my Ribbons:

That's about it. How everyone else is enjoying KSP as much as I am!

Started to build a Munbase, this time with connected modules. Temstar's awesome modular design was used as inspiration for the crawler and trusses, but I still needed to deliver them...somehow. Oh the feeling of satisfaction when this ugly bas**** actually worked!

It needed some F5 spamming, though. When your design is based on flipping things over, something is bound to go wrong

That crane looks fantastic! Two questions: Does it rotate and how in your deity's name did you get it to the Mun?

With much help from the folks here on the forums (most notably numerbois, Claw and Captain Sierra), I managed to get the Auk VI spaceplane redesigned to the point where I was able to fly it into orbit. I set up a primitive runway ILS in the save game in which I built the ship and then proceeded to land an Auk IV I'd launched earlier. She made the runway but tailstruck; lost the nukes. Rest of the plane arrived intact. I blame myself for the damage - had the flare angle too high.

A while back I sent a mission to Duna that I did not intend to bring back.

They landed on the northern ice cap, which isn't what I originally intended, but a Duna landing is a Duna landing.

iFFVIVd.jpg

They had enough fuel left to reach orbit, but could not return, which is okay as they weren't planned to.

Today I launched another mission to Duna, this one with less weight on its lander and a nuclear engine for the Kerbal to Duna transfer, removing still more weight from the design and improving the effectiveness of the Launch stage.

They landed fairly close to the Equator, and with quite a bit more fuel than the first ship did.

o5zMn4E.jpg

...but it turns out that though they landed with a decent chunk of fuel, it was just shy of a return. I spent ages fiddling with absolutely beautiful transfer windows and could not get anything done. I could get into Kerbin's SoI, just barely, but no closer than that. So after a while messing with that, I decided to move the two Duna-stranded ships together so the Kerbals don't get lonely having only 2 other Kerbals to talk to.

I moved my Polar ship to within 10 km of the equatorial one, ended up landing in a very nice flat area which is of decent size as far as landing targets (for the future).

Then I hopped the lighter and easier to handle Equatorial lander the 10km and parked it next to the former Polar lander.

BZwb3OS.jpg

So I guess that's technically the start of my first base :)

I've been testing hardware and continuing preparations for my Touring ship, the Euryale-class Merry Go Round.

Merry Go Round has carried out spaceplane operations on Moho, although its spaceplane was unfortunately trashed trying to take off from a mountain.

It's been refueled by another Euryale-class, the Let There Be Light.

On the Mun, a Cowley-class heavy lander, Blue Toga Plus rover and Skurj-class spaceplane/rover rendezvous at night near the rim of the East Crater.

The Cowley should in principle be capable of single stage descent and ascent from anywhere less than Laythe, carrying a reasonable payload.

The Blue Toga is more-or-less indestructible in normal operation* and can flip itself upright using its internal gyro on any world apart from Eve.

The Skurj planes are descent-and-return capable from anywhere except Tylo and Eve, but much more fragile.

30eoaOk.png

In Kerbin orbit, the Euryale-class Journey of the Sorceror collects a Science and Hab module.

IaNE3pR.png

Journey of the Sorceror arrives at Eve, where it's waiting in a parking orbit for the Merry Go Round and Let There Be Light to arrive from Moho.

There's a Skurj in orbit around Eve whose pilot will transfer to the Hab module before the spaceplane attempts a landing on remote control.

Today I somehow managed to vastly improve the chances of survival for the seemingly doomed crew of the vessel 'Crispy Rock'. Jebediah, Bob, Dohat and Kircas were sent to Moho in an advanced vessel that relied on Ion Engines for a great part. Delta-V capacity was huge given the small size of the vessel, but the relative velocity to Moho of 7,3 km/s prooved to great. Only after burning 90% of all available propellants (fuel, Xenon, RCS) the crew realised the relative velocity was too huge and beiing lost in interplanetary space forever was almost certain. Kerbin couldn't be reached anymore, but Eve would be an alternative; aerobraking into the dense atmosphere could result in some form of orbit around the planet, making a rescue mission in the near future a whole lot easier. Eventually, the vessel ran out of all propellants and course corrections had to be done by getting the Kerbonauts to push the vessel with their EVA-pack. Speed relative to Eve was also more than 7 km/s, the PE of 54 km above the surface however was just right to get into a (elleptical) orbit. The Kerbonauts seemingly were nervous but also a bit optimistic during this dangerous action ...

That crane looks fantastic! Two questions: Does it rotate and how in your deity's name did you get it to the Mun?

Yes, it rotates 360 degrees, tilts 90 degrees up and down and the winch is positionable from about 1m off the center axis to two full gantry rail lengths (~20 meters); the photo shows it at full extension. The original (50m+) version was fully stable in translation, however the linkages between girder segments were very susceptible to torsional forces around the vertical axis. It would oscillate through a good 90 degrees for minutes after rotating it. This version (the 25m variant) has integrated plates and struts to damp the negative torsional effects of boom rotation, however they are still apparent, especially on the Mun. Notice the supplemental RCS thrusters along the boom and the ~600 units of monopropellant strapped to the cupola module... ;) Does a fine job of helping me manually counteract the oscillations.

With regards to its transport to the Mun, I used ExtraplanetaryLaunchpads to build it on the Mun rather than flying it up. HOWEVER... I originally did consider adding some 90 degree hinges and docking ports to the outriggers to 'fold' it up (with the boom at full vertical and the gantry fully retracted). Notice that the base is a 2.5m LFO tank; a 2.5m docking collar and the above modifications and it's just about launch ready...

After Bill inspected Jeb's work he deemed the station too fragile for every day use. "We better just keep this as our own personal fuel stash" he said to Jeb.

Jeb was all for that! I mean how far can we go all nice and filled up. "Bah science, let's just have fun!"

"Bob designed a new World of Tanks, much sturdier"

The build was just enough for me to get those 8 empty tanks into orbit. Fuel was depleted on my orbital burn. I am not off by much on a circular, about 2K so one of these guys is going to put the finishing touches on it. Maybe take it to 140K?

Here's is hoping it is a better design!

Didn't manage to post it here last night but with my newly re-unlocked Mainsails and jumbo tanks, I went nuts and built a 1000-ton vertical-launch SSTO. Forgot to take a screenie of course... wait lemme double check.

Oh look, there it is!

screen19.jpg

And yeah, since I ended up dragging it outside the circle in the VAB, it spawned off the side of the pad. Turns out you can do that!

I've been trying to get an ion powered spacecraft to Moho. The Marici 1:

nf1p.png

But it seems to enjoy shaking itself apart:

w3hb.png

It has about 3200 delta-v with a full mas of 6.54 t and a dry mass of 6.05 t. I got it to fly-by Moho, but no luck obtaining orbit yet; it has the fuel to do it though.

I haven't played this game in a while, decided to get some realism mods and start a new save.

Not even on my first sub-orbital trip when disaster strikes:

screenshot32.png

Somehow Bill left the ship without EVA fuel. To make matters worse we have no RCS and we can't re-ignite our engines.

screenshot33.png

screenshot34.png

Through the presaverance of the crew, Bill is finally saved.

screenshot37.png

We can go home!

screenshot40.png

Wait

screenshot49.png

What

screenshot51.png

NO. THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN.

screenshot53.png

RIP.

screenshot56.png

I forgot how fun this game was :v:
