What did you do in KSP1 today?

Planted a flag and returned my Mun duo to Kerbin.

Took me half a rotation around the planet to remember Mun is locked and wont face the planet any differently any time soon ...

Burned for the lowest (above terrain) orbit ever - only things around Kerbin and a survey probe high above Mun yet - and aligned it with Mun's orbit around Kerbin - not so sure if this was even necessary or a waste of fuel. First try sent me in to a Kerbol orbit, so I probably wanted to make it easier brain-wise for me.

Second try got me a weird elliptical orbit around Kerbin, lowered Pe 65km into the atmosphere which was not quite enough to bring down my Ap from 9Mkm ... wanting to aerobreak real badly, at Ap I lowered Pe to 55km and burned to slow down in the upper atmosphere with all remaining fuel (I could take credit for calculating so efficiently and precisely, but honestly I just got lucky) and mono too. Three more wide rounds around Kerbin got my speed down enough for landing.

During one of these aerobreaking drills I opened my drogue chutes (took the whole lander/takeoff assemby back home and not just the command module) but they didnt pre-open that high in the atmosphere - EVAed to pack them back up but the option was not there - they opened at last when the air was dense enough, phew ...

After getting to a good point with my Advanced Solid Rocket Boosters, I figured I should try out a shuttle.

First flight was very balanced until SRB seperation

For the shuttle to have enough TWR after SRB sep, I needed to burn until off about 3200 units of fuel from the ET before I launched. Awesome!

Don't believe the fuel gauge, it includes the fuel in the shuttle (without oxidizer). Main tank had ~200 units of fuel total left.

So in only about 40 minutes I designed a successful orbiter + stack, and never had any problems in balance until the SRBs burned out 100 seconds into the flight.

Been a while, but today I successfully put the first part of my Mun refueling and research station into Munar orbit and docked the Mun Lander to it for future missions:

A second fuel tank and a Mun Geology Lab (essentially a Hitchhiker module dressed up to be all science-y) will be added to the station later.

Proved yet again to myself that my structural engineering chops are up to snuff.

Also proved again to myself that I'm not yet good enough to lift a giant rover into orbit, much less land it on the Mun. But, there's always another stage, always another tomorrow, and always more boosters.

My recommendation: moar struts!

Today I continued my work in my apollo-style Mün-Rocket, tomorrow I will try to land it by hand (no Mechjeb and stuff).

Here you see me pull the MM (Münar Module) out of SMA (Spacecraft Münar Module Adapter)

One of my friends demanded to plant a bavarian flag with the bavarian anthem in background. He insisted in a non-return Eeloo-Mission, just to prove that one can do it. Because of reasons.

And so I designed a Apollostyle one way craft, and there we fly.

Mission accomplished. I may provide a Vid, if anyone is interessted.

Dug out 0.19.1, it ran quite well on my new, more powerful computer.

I'm going to get the kerbals who were still in space when I changed to 0.20 home.

That's right Bill and crew, we're going home!

From the pole to the equator, and the lander is in sight.

Next got to get Jeb to his ship..

And get Bob off Moho, then they're all meeting return modules in orbit, and we're going home!

IRL, I got home today too, after passing all the (model) planets.

I set to work designing a...well...for lack of a better title, a "corpse recovery mission".

My plan for a Munbase failed, quite horribly, and resulted in 8 Kerbalnauts being stranded on the Mun. Their habitation module broke free after the base fell off the skycrane, it then tumbled down hill for a few minutes exploding and breaking into dozens of different pieces. The habs then broke off and rolled/bounced some more before finally coming to a rest beneath an arch. 2km away from the initial crash site.

I decided that the crew could not have survived that kind of impact. So now I'm working out a way to use the Kerbal Attachment System to somehow recover the damaged hab modules and return them to Kerbin. Y'know, leave no man behind and all that.
