Talk about diverse performances....

After I downloaded 0.20, I was quiet delighted with the considerable speed and optimized RAM usage(God's still blessing 32-bit user:D). While I also heard that there're many ones get a worse performance. And this seemed to also happen in previous releases. What brought about this?

For those of us with "old" computers the performance is noticeable (not crashing on second launch). But I think this was accomplished lower the resolution of distant object, so the planet looks blander than it did for people with high performance machines.

Yep, My pc is fairly outdated now I upgraded the ram to 16gigs a few months ago and I'm going to get 2 more sticks of that and transfer it to the new machine. Then put the old 8 gigs in this again. I get decent FPS around 40 or 50 on 300 parts then it drops dramatically.

I'm running a clean install of .20. The only mod is the updated MechJeb 2. Fantastic performance. Smooth as silk, and not a bit of lag to be found. No crashes, no problems of note.

Out of curiosity thanks to all the caterwauling going on, I decided on an experiment. I took a copy of my .19 install and overwrote it with the .20 update, mods and all. The performance tanked, full stop.

It is not Squad's responsibility to guarantee backward compatibility with existing mods, or even game saves. Not if you want continued improvement and innovation. If they did, it would mean instant stagnation of development. Kick and scream all you want, deny it at the top of your lungs, but it's the truth.

If your current situation is best described by the experiment I outlined, then accept that you've created a mess you need to abandon. Start over with a fresh install, then exercise something known in mature circles as patience while your favourite mods gets properly updated.

Oh, and welcome to the world of pre-release software.

I have a laptop and I've seen an uptick in performance, most notably the music. Before, my 300+ ships were causing my music to stutter and jump until it got to the point where it was just plain abhorrent. It either isn't doing that any more, or to a much lesser degree.

@dharak1 - I hope you aren't buying that much RAM for gaming. There are a few reasons people max out their RAM but the majority is 'leetness', not practicality.

So basically re-install and start a new save file and things will work again?

As I said, start with a completely clean install. Does it still give you problems? If not, then you have outdated mods gumming up the works. If you want to know which one is causing the problem, install one mod at a time and test it. Eventually you'll find the culprit. This is called regression testing.

Or, as I also said, be patient and wait for the mods to get updated. Either way, your best path now is to start with a clean install and work from there.

I should have mentioned that I have no mods-pure stock so far.

Yes, that would make a difference since it doesn't conform to the scenario I described. If you're experiencing significant problems on a clean install, make sure your video and audio drivers are up to date, that you don't have heavy processes running in the background, the usual suspects, etc.

I just figured that like other games it's buggy like this after a major update, I'll give it a few days.
