I tried to get to Minmus for the first time ever with a new launcher I had designed for the situation. After several failed launches I finally got there, but needed to use up fuel from the lander in order to finish the transfer burn. Luckily I still had a full tank in the center, I'll just stage to activate that engine, except that dropped the side tanks that had my landing legs... No big deal, its Minmus, we'll just land on the engine. Try staging to activate the engine again... NOPE! Now the full tank and my last engine are plummeting to the ground and Doodbert Kerman has to try to land with his EVA pack...

The fun begins around 22:30

Spoilers: I mess up the rescue and Jeb gets stuck there too, but that's the next episode.

Surround the url in VIDEO tags like so:

I had to save Bill from being stuck in orbit, which is a disaster in itself. I got the brilliant idea to test out a rocket with an extra capsule on it that could save Bill. I mistakenly had Jeb piloting the thing instead of my two very stupid "test" pilots. I got into orbit, separate the two capsules and prepare to switch to Jeb to launch his parachute... well... that didn't work so well. It wouldn't let me switch by the time I got around too it, and poor Jeb made a deep dirt hole in Kerban.

I was testing my gargantuan Nova rocket, when an unplanned rapid disassembly occurred.

Good thing I had included a Launch Escape System, otherwise my poor kerbals would have been toast!

The rocket's remains created an actual debris field, too! Normally stuff just explodes when it impacts with Kerbin. (I might have been fooling with the debug menu at the time, I can't quite remember).

What are some of the KSP community's more epic fails and hilarious disasters?

Had this been whitout the UI, it would be the no. one pic of KSP
Lol, thanks. I still have the save file of the re-entry attempt, so maybe one of these days I'll give it another whirl. I've actually been tempted to post it as a challenge, except I suspect it may not be possible to succeed...

here is a sloppy rushed "artists" rendition of what it might have looked like without the UI.

I did go to space, with four of my finest, but they're stuck in it, and to this day, I'm still trying to get them out.

It all started with a new design of my science craft. After I unlocked and added the science jr. and ladders, I went from a weird design to this:

2013-11-23_00015.jpg

Eager and greedy, I decided it was good enough for the moon (as you can see in the pic above). That was my first mistake, as I should have waited until I got the fuel lines and bigger tanks. After my successful landing, I posted a flag, took a few kick-ass photos, and took off. I then proceeded to make my second mistake: I made a counter-clockwise orbit, not knowing that you waste fuel like that. I quicksaved in orbit, and attempted to get back to Kerbin. I escaped the moon, got in a big orbit with Kerbin, only to run out of fuel when my periapsis was a short distance away from Kerbin (maybe about a million and a half meters):

2013-11-27_00006.jpg

After several retries using the handy button called F9, I realized that I just simply didn't have the fuel. Thus, I sent home what science I could, and used new parts to build a space craft grabber to grab the craft and push it back to Kerbin. However, even after a night of learning how to rendezvous with another craft in orbit, I just couldn't quite make orbit well enough with the mun (it was VERY tilted, and I was going to crash almost each time), and I realized that my single night of education wasn't good enough to get to it even if I did come close.

2013-11-23_00026.jpg

In the end, I resorted to pushing my craft using Jebediah (the crew was Jeb, Bill, Bob, and Buzz. All the right people, correct?). I would have to push to hours to make it back, so I eventually gave up after cutting about a couple thousand meters off my periapsis.

2013-11-27_00008.jpg

After holding that sacred button that shalt be dubbed "F9", I called it a night.

And thus, they are stuck forever orbiting the mun until something new comes up. Ideas, anyone?

(Sorry for long post; man, if only we could use spoilers, and yeah, I know it was boring, but I didn't have anything else. Seriously, I had nothing in my recollection that was absolutely shocking and non-steriotypical)

I was trying to attach a hugely overcomplicated fuel tank to my space station. Turns out, 12-booster asparagus designs lifting 100-ton payloads before you've unlocked the Jumbo-64 or Mainsail can be... problematic.

Sometimes parts survived.

Sometimes, those parts even included the pilot.

Technically I got into space, because I managed to make my first Duna intercept. Yes, I know it's nothing for you pros who go to Laythe and return, all the while returning from Eve's sea level daily, but it's my first planetary intercept, so I'm happy... at least until I pressed space somewhere during Map view and ejected the pod from the main body.

DAMN IT.

The worse thing was that it was in KMP, so no F5/F9.

Well, I have good days and I have bad days. This was a very bad day.

I designed my Duna Explorer on the fly, making it up as I went, and I managed to get it assembled and it does seem to fly OK. I decided that a lot could be done better, so I when I went to built its follow-up ship, I determined to make some improvements. One of these was a better design for its triple fuel tanks. The originals were kind of flexxy, making the ship bend when maneuvering hard, so I made the ends of the new tank assembly rigidly attached to the end of the middle tank. Here's how that went:

I went back to the original design, which still works fine. Sometimes your first idea is the best one.

This is one of those situations where you should start using struts to stitch tanks together.

Maybe, but having to attach struts vertically just to keep two tank segments together on such a simple rocket is quite ridiculous. I'd rather cheat and pretend that the game doesn't hate me. :P
