astropapi1
This is a rocket-only SSTO. Still applies to this thread, heh? It's the Corsair 4B Cargo SSTO. It can lift ~0.2 tons to a stable orbit and deorbit on it's own. 100% stock besides MJ (for standard ascent profiles) and Engineer Redux (For the info). On the pad:Orbiting with payload released:The aftermath:Here's it's thread, if anyone is interested in discussing my point:http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/showthread.php/47380-Pico-SSTO-Lifter-A-K-A-The-R-48-7S-needs-a-nerf
KissSh0t
This is my.. I forget I lost count SSTO. It can go over 2000m/s on Jet engines before having to switch to Rocket Engines.I got to orbit so easily I’m not even joking.. it was just like Ohh hey I’m going up okay.. bam.. orbit..I wonder if I could fly this to Duna.. mmmm..Forgot to put RCS thrusters though. I actually think it looks pretty ugly.. but it works pretty good.
KissSh0t
Just to be sure I went to land it.. but I lost parts..important parts..Maybe I should try landing more Gently… mmmmm… xDNeeds some more work, but it's getting there. PetWolverine
My new SSTO, the delta-winged Epsilon:Javascript is disabled. View full albumI completely guessed at where to do my deorbiting burn, and I wish I'd written down my longitude at the time, because my first approach absolutely nailed the Space Center. And it went perfectly! Erm, no, I caught the edge of the runway and was falling too fast anyway. Bob, you're my most experienced spaceplane pilot, how could you let this happen?Fortunately I had quicksaved in the upper atmosphere, but my aerobraking maneuver put me in a little different spot on the second try. I noticed I was about to pass right over the Space Center at 15 km up and moving at about Mach 3.5, so I went into a dive (wish I'd thought to take a screenshot), which shook the craft so hard that some parts broke off inside the cargo bay. I think SAS was trying too hard to fight the plane's tendency to point into the wind, and one of the reaction wheels tore itself loose.Still, I brought it down softly for my first-ever runway landing (normally I miss and land on the grass). In the last screenshot, "Highest Altitude Achieved" is showing where I was when I quickloaded. Those 10.5 Gs must have been while pulling out of the dive.Mods involved: FAR, B9, Modular Fuels, Real Fuels, MechJeb and TAC Fuel Balancer. Oh, and the struts are from NovaPunch, I think. B9's SABRE M engines get me to Mach 5.4 at around 32 km altitude before I switch them to rocket mode, and with Real Fuels they run on H2 and O2, just like real life. KissSh0t
A tip for finding the runway... build a simple probe, maybe add lights to it, and drive it in front of the runway and leave it there... this way you will always be able to find the runway, even if it's night time. Radam
So when you are cruzing to gain max speed from engines, how much do all those wings help? Or what is your pitch when your engines are at full. Of course im asking those who limit themselves to 3 ram intakes... KissSh0t
Find the maximum altitude your aircraft can fly at, going up slowing and looking at your altitude and Air intake and making a mental note of where the jet engines cut out... then stay under that altitude until you have gotten to your maximum speed? Of course im asking those who limit themselves to 3 ram intakes...For me with the B9 aero pack running the large cone intakes, SCRAM M intakes, for the larger engines, and running a 1:1 ratio on those I can climb to 23km without flame-outs. And 25-28km when at max speed, around Mach 4.6 or so.

Radam
Well I was thinking along the lines of: "I have a stock 72t, 80 parts, 2.2 ratio, vessel that uses 3t of liquid fuel to get to 1200ms at 23km, why should I add wings?" Or is this thread for spaceplane SSTOs only

Radam
Anything SSTO... It does not need wings.Ok then So, Ive used logomatic recently and calculated the amount of intake air required, how much intakes provide, how much drag, turbojet power curve etc... (stock)The resoult is this chart: Basically 3 curves for altitude/velocity ceiling for given intake to engine ratio. Then 2 curves for max speed for given weight per engine (drag coefficient used is 0.21, might be more with more intakes and wings...).And the orange curve is mechjeb assisted ascent of the SSTO im showing around as of late... 2.2 ram and 9t per engine.Could be better, but one needs vertical speed aswell.Edit: Ive done some manual fiddling with ascent so there is another curve... For one more ton into orbit. Edited August 26, 2013 by Radam

pa1983
And the tail opens! Nice! The nose you mean Opening the nose allowed for rear engines and stabilizer to be fitted. With out that it would never been possible to get the performance. Needed. Edited August 26, 2013 by pa1983
