What's the heaviest thing you've launched?

Recommended Posts

The heaviest thing I've launched was my first prototype of the interplanetary cruiser I will be using for my next AAR. It was really heavy and barely made it to orbit with its nuclear rockets. I'm still working on new designs and excetera....

What is your definition of "launched" here? Just to a Kerbin orbit in which the lowest point is higher than 70 km so its out of atmosphere?

And I'd like to repeat what Tokay Gris said - are you just counting the payload that you get that high?

Here's why it matters: If I made a rocket in which I use the first two stages to get into a Kerbin orbit, and then from there use a third stage to go to Duna, where I separate it and land the payload on Duna, then my payload into Kerbin orbit is BOTH the Duna payload AND the third stage.

So far the largest payload I've done is like that - a complete craft into orbit that then goes further to another planet and more stages break off there.

I once launched a rescue mission back in .18 or .17, don't really know anymore. The rescue craft which had a pretty nasty damned robotics arm was about 120T and the launcher about 400T if I remember correctly. It barely made to orbit, but once up there, everything ran smoothly :P

Nominal payload: 252 tonnes (7 orange tanks)

GLOW: 3139.39 tonnes

It was really a test to see what I could do with a giant inefficient launcher. Technically it failed, though MechJeb could likely get it into orbit. Or I could have transferred a few kg of fuel...

My "heavies" are somewhat above 1000 tons for the complete rocket. Some need to be refuelled in orbit, others don't.

My refuel-tanker is around 100 tons and of course doesn't use it's own fuel (would be useless then, now would it).

I have gotten heavier stuff into orbit, but that usually was with quite an amount of luck and lots of lag...

I launched 2000T . 6 asparagus big 135T rocketry tanks, each with the biggest engine, around another center one, the whole thing being surrounded by 12 rockojumbo 64 with 12 mainsails engines.

Payload at the top is a core station with a tanker (the biggest rocketry tank 135t) plus some RCs tanks, the whole thing being equipped with 6 asparagus 820L rocketry tanks, each with a liquid engine (power 500). It arrives on Mun orbit with still 4 tanks full and weight should be around 180T.

There is certainly a big waste in there, because i have not still try to use Atomic engine.

With only the stock parts i launched up to 600T

I made a 3000Mg ~1:10 (payload was something like 325Mg) launcher in 0.19.1 (and it worked completely :D)

Of course, it took 40 min to launch the thing... and I did it manually.

Thing on the top is actually "fake weights", to get that 325Mg...

Back in the 0.18 I made a 155t lifter (over 600 parts).

Here is the playload in orbit

The .craft of the ship is here 100% stock

I have a tendency since the 0.19 to reduce the mass of my playloads, to cut it in smaller pieces, cause launching that thing was pretty a painfull experience.

I still have a 120 tons lifter nowdays but I use it just to launch the cores of my space ships (represents less than 1/10th of my launches).

I use mechjeb for lift off and ascent.

Because time is very long, not interesting to follow a path, the autopilot does it better.

But always land manually, that's the most exiting.

This:

Supposed to be the booster stage of my Jool Conqueror Ship back in 0.19, ~420 parts with the lifter (standard issue lifter used). But I have used most its fuel to provide me some extra OOMPH during the climb to orbit, so basically it's almost composed of empty cans to be filled after. I've deorbited it after discovering a massive design failure regarding tricouplers and dockable engines.

The second one is this thing: The Kerbomunopolis. Should have been a challenge starter (most kerbals ferried on the Mun in one lander without using any part add-ons and plugins), but eventually abandoned. Although I'm reconsidering to recreate it...

An eight-hundred tonne fuel station. I suppose it doesn't really count, since it used some of its fuel supply to reach orbit. It was essentially just an SSTO rocket with various docking ports all over, that shed boosters as it went along.

It was the Genesis node for my Citadel Station. I was going to add Kethane storage and conversion nodes as well as a construction node for building interplanetary ships. Sadly, it got eaten when the new update broke a couple of my mods.

2116 tons on pad, ~350 tons to LKO. It's not that efficient but it gets the job done.

That is very impressive and efficient. You have an ratio of 0.16 who is pretty extreme.

Did an launch

My largest regular is 150 ton spare parts, on an around 2400 ton launcher. total weight to LKO is probably 250, as its reusable and with an upper stage only for docking.

Curretly my largest Payload is 350 Tons, for a total weight, combined with the lifter, of 2636 Tons.

Complete Lifter with a Testpayload of 349.5 Tons and some spare DV. This is the largest payload I have shot into Orbit. The Payload is currently not struted, because my lifter is saved without Payload.

And here a Picture of the last Stage. The Payload has already been delivered and the Lifter is currently deorbiting itself.

Also this thing is designed to work with FAR and completely Stock.

I think my heaviest payload to orbit was about 175 tons, but I do not believe the thrust of the rocket was the cause of this success, but instead the device was so ugly that Kerbin simply rejected it from its surface.
