Will 0.21 create a massive Newb firestorm?

By now most, if not all, KSP forum frequenters already know in detail what the new 0.21 will do to their "save" files. However, most gamers do not use forums until a crisis has occurred. So, it's most likely that hundreds, perhaps thousands, of new KSP'ers will be jolted to the bone when their "saves" don't work.

With this in mind the intended purpose of this thread is to solicit ideas from us "frequenters" as to what might be done to lessen the impact of this coming horde of hate. I totally agree that "save" breaking is part and parcel with alpha-adventurism and is to be expected. But, rest assured, that the majority of the uninformed KSP community will not see it that way.

I will start:

When you fire up KSP, direct or on Steam, you will get a BIG BOLD NOTICE (perhaps with a link) about the impending update and what it's impact will be. Kind of like what you get with Minecraft, Borderlands, etc..

NEXT ....

I don't think so ... because KSP isn't a game that appeals to the masses/kind of players who would behave in such a manner.

This. The KSP community is understanding, and while many will be a bit sad they will lose their game saves, they get its for the better.

Edit:Yeah, I'm just going to edit that out before the storm starts.

I think it would be fair enough.

Anyone who has spent a while working on something may upset to learn that they won't be able to carry it on into the next version, so it would be polite to give a warning.

And its kind of weird for you to call yourself a "KSP Forum Frequenter" and calling others noobs when you joined last month.

Don't forget some people look and read the forums for ages before making the jump and joining. I did.

Edit: Saw your edit. Now people reading this are going to be looking up and down to make sense of it, haha.

I think that a good portion of KSP players do read the forums, use the subreddit, or something to stay connected. It is like an integral part of the KSP experience right now (until they move social features into the game client). Ming is right though: a lot of game communities do experience a huge influx when there are problems. Hopefully our player base is more connected and well-read than those games. :)

It probably will, look at the huuuge influx of people complaining about this or that over the last several months, that wasn't really happening this time last year.

And most of those people who don't seem to understand what "early access" means are still here, so yeah I expect lots of complaints.

Yep, that be me alright. I read often (since April, 340+hrs on KSP) and post very little. But this is not about me or some arbitrary rules concerning the use of the "F" word. It's intended to help others who may feel rather badly about their "save" files not working.

People who build stuff big enough to be seriously affected by the save breaking will probably know that it is happening.

Also, I smell elitism from the OP... KSP isn't the kind of game anyone enjoys. I like to think that people with the patience to learn orbital mechanics and maturity to laugh at their inevitable failures won't be mad about an alpha game breaking stuff.

Ugh I wish it wouldn't happen but sometimes it can't be avoided. Some (or perhaps many) don't realize that they are playing an alpha game in heavy developement. Who knows what the community is like though. Sure its great here on the forums but the rest of the players could be different. I think spreading the news isn't a bad idea.

Don't take that comment too much to heart. I'm afraid you rather invited the "elitism" accusation when you used the phrase "noob storm". The rest of your Original Post was good and helpful (though on the pessimistic side) but one ill-judged phrase negated much of that. One has to be careful about that sort of thing!

Thanks for the input (really). I didn't know that noob & newb were so different in meaning. Thanks to you, and the Urban Dictionary, I've learned something new (for me) today. I corrected my original post title.

It's inevitable, but tell them politely what just happened. Don't shrug them off because of a "common" question, particularly if the asker asks it politely. A question asked with a good intention should get the proper response.

Anyone that "OMG WHAT IS HAPPEN MY SAV FILE ISNT WORKING PLZ FIX THIZ SQUAD" or "WTF SQUAD MY SAEV FILE NOT WORKING I LOST MY 1000 PART STATION WTF WTF WTF" or anyone who wants to incite flames using the issue as the backstory, should that particular person won't respond accordingly to polite responses, deserves to be criticized and neutralized by the community with EXTREME PREJUDICE.

I think it would be fair enough.Don't forget some people look and read the forums for ages before making the jump and joining. I did.

And there are some people who have been here for ages, left for somewhat long time and just went back recently, like me (my OJD was around September 2011) :D

"Heavy development", what a joke. If a paid team of a dozen people releasing half of a new feature every two months is 'heavy development', what do you call light development?

Do you really believe that if you just post this complaint 101 times, it will suddenly convince all the people who didn't buy it the first 100 times you posted it?

Here's a good example of why notifying players about the impending update is a good thing. Commander Zoom has been around since Sep 2011 and he just found out (Yesterday, 23:20) about this "save" breaking update. I realize that this forum already provides notice of the update(s). I'm only suggesting going a little step further with a KSP game launch banner for those that don't use the forum.

By the way, once this notification banner coding has been implemented it can then be a resident utility for any future update notifications, hot news topics, alerts, etc.. That would be kinda cool I think.

Well... damn. Wish I'd seen this thread before I spent today putting my first base (three big landers, eighteen kerbals) on the Mun.

I've been playing this game since .8 or so, but I've never actually gotten very far - see my ribbons. First I was waiting for real docking, not mods; then when it finally arrived, I was busy with other stuff. I was finally ready to start interplanetary exploration in earnest... for the first time ever, I've been assembling stations, building infrastructure.

Maybe I'll just hold off on updating. :P

For those that think this idea sucks space dust take solace in knowing I'll not labor it any further. Ultimately it's up to the Dev's anyway. :sealed:
