Doing it Apollo style

Recommended Posts

Well, I'd love to have Scott Manley in this challenge - but he will have to post it and count his points himself ;)

I'm pretty sure he doesn't have a forum account. If he did, I imagine he'd cause an interesting stir every time he posted.

Also, seeing as I'm posting, congrats on thread of the month!

"No mods! All stock, no Mechjeb. (Did Neil and Buzz land by auto pilot?" While I agree doing a challenge you want to make things interesting the MechJeb statement is false. Who guided the LEM into a boulder field? The autopilot. Who controlled the engine gimbling? the autopilot. So to answer your question "Did Neil and Buzz land by auto pilot", yes and no. He took over and manually landed when the computer screwed up. Who controlled the command modules decent in Earth's atmosphere? The autopilot.

Ok, my two cents :)

Ok, I`ve not been able to stop updating my craft. Because of the need to just test the craft itself instead of my piloting I have fitted mechjeb so I do not qualify for the challenge with this version but I thought I would show it off. It has a new rover and full fairings for aerodynamics...

sorry for the pictures being all in the wrong order

Very impressed with everyone's achievements. Here's my attempt without trying to get too many points on the first go.

-Everything has to be started with a single rocket (no building ships in orbit or refueling in orbit)

-You have to fly a LOR mission (you need a Command Module [CM] and a specialized Münar Module [MM])

-No mods! All stock, no Mechjeb. (Did Neil and Buzz land by auto pilot?)

-BYOR (Bring your own rocket) - The rocket must be your own design

+30 for the basics.

Goals

- 3-man Mission +10 Check

- 2-man Lander +10 Check

- 2-stage Lander (leave the decent-engine on the mün) +20 Check

- Main rocked aspargus'd? -10 (Wernher von Kerman does not like aspargus!) Check

- Escape tower? +10 Check

- Lander stored behind the CM during ascent +20 Check

- Lander tucked away behind some fairing? +5 Check

- Free return trajectory to the mün +10 Check

- Flawless landing (no parts broke off, Neil Armstrong is watching you!) +10 Check

- Got a Munar Roving Vehicle (MRV) on board? +15 Nope

- After succesfull Mün landing docked CM and MM in Orbit (no swapping ships without docking them first) +10 Check

- MM disposed by crashing it into the Mün (remove Kerbal first!) +5 Check

- Plant flag on the Mün (no cumulative, i.e. two flags don't get you 6 points) +3 Check

- Spashing down on Kerbin (land on water) +5 Nope. I tried but ended up with a ground landing

- Kerbal dies -20 Check

That's 143 by my count. I'll post the short version of the video soon.

Be kind when watching the video as I made several mistakes. :)

are you sure? I wouldn't be :P

what about another goal: after trans-munar injection, remote control the third stage and crash it into the Mun.

I am SO goin' to apply! :) in fact I've already done this challenge many times in 0.21.1... I'll try to make some video :) just a bit of tweaking to be able to get more points :D

As a matter of fact, mostly yes. The plan was to land solely on autopilot, but the autopilot wanted to land on a slope that was not visible from Earth, so Neil took the control and guided the Eagle to a more safe place to land, while the autopilot controlled the throttle for a more fuel-efficient landing. As far as I know, however, the other apollo missions landed on full autopilot (except #13, of course).

By the way, this is not meant to undermine your rules. I personally only use MechJeb for the statistics.

Finally got a reliable bullseye on the target landing area. My next task is going to be rebuilding the booster. Seriously also reconsidering a rover re-design after the issues I've been having lately.

Occurs to me that I should check for rules updates.

yes, yes I know - you can read it up on the first page...

This is a brilliant challenge and your rocket design is awesome. But I have a rebuttal challenge in true space race form: Can you do it Soviet Style?

The Soviets attempted to launch a manned Munar Mission using an N1 rocket, a one seat LK Lander, and a two seat modified Soyuz Command Module but the project was defunded before a working model could be tested.

The Challenge: Build an N1, Soyuz 7K-LOK, and an LK. Successfully land and return to Earth. Bonus points for building and deploying the Lunakhod (literally moon-walker) rover on the surface

Have you thought about extra goals like a 5 engine second stage (maybe +10) and doing the mun burn with the remaining fuel in the second stage (maybe +5) so it follows the FRT to burn up in kerbins atmosphere?

I'd be happy with both of these, (+10 on my attempt) :P

Yeah, this actually sounds quite good, although I could add 5 engine first stage for another 10 points - I'll think about this.

Here is my attempt with a cheap ship.

It was a real mess to land it, I had to try at least 10 times before landing it properly ! ( and I had no idea about chere the NAM was so I didn't even try to go there)

Wilbert got a bit hot during the atmosphere reentry but he is alive at least.

Points:

30 - base points

+10 - two men lander

-10 - aspargus'd

+20 - lander behind CM during ascent

+10 - free return trajectory

+10 - flawless landing. Reaaaally hard without the landing struts.

+15 - MRV

+2 - test drive. Then Bob crashed the rover twice, broke the solar panels. Damn you Bob.

+10 - no swapping ships before docking MM and CM into orbit

+5 - splash down ( pure luck )

TOTAL : 102 points.

He is here. Feels like he always has been...

But I'm sure he just hasn't seen this thread buried underneath the rest of them, and simply needs an invitation, hey?

Romain has been added.

@Aparture (Isn't it spelled aperture?) Kerbals stranded on the Mün are considered dead.

@Switchblade Not a big fan of pushing people to my thread. If he wants to enter my challenge, i'm honored - if not, I'm fine with that too. Also, right now the Threat is a sticky - I don't think anyone needs help to find it ;)
