Kerbal rescue Mission - Long distance walking?

Recommended Posts

So i just sent a new Kerbal to rescue the Kerbal that stranded on the Mun. Problem is it was my second time flying there and i also had a bad landing spot (one of the huge craters so i pretty much slided forever.

Point is my Kerbal rescue-Rocket is pretty far away from the Kerbal that has to be rescued (walking distance about 1/4 to 1/2 of the moon ...)

1) How do i get there faster? Is it even worth it to try? (i need some of the jetpacks power later on because i have no ladder ... :) )

2) How do i get any menues when walking with a kerbal i have to orient on the stars to find the way because setting my craft as target seems to do nothing?

- i cant fly near the Kerbal since this would mean 2 stranded Kerbals (barely enough fuel - i hope)

- walking normally takes forever

From my experience...my advice are....

1) Get yourself learning the pinpoint landing method,

2) Get yourself a better landing rocket. (Without the crew, or space for both.)

3) Send the rescue 2 rocket and get 1 of them back to orbit Mun or directly back to Kerbin.

4) Send other rescue 3 rocket and get another 1 back to orbit Mun to meet up the other, or directly back to Kerbin.

Note: Walking is not the way. Jet-pack 100% only give you about 20km distance.

Once you start trying it, you'll find that it takes FOREVER to walk a Kerbal just a few kilometers, even with RCS hops. If you're 1/4th of Mun's circumference away, that would be a project for days of real time. Save yourself a lot of grief and boredom and fly another ship there.

Let's see...

Have the rescue ship do a suborbital hop to a closer position, if it has enough fuel.

Send the poor stranded kerbal a rover.

Send the Rescue Ship a rover to pick him up with.

Send another rescue ship to land closer.

Send the poor stranded kerbal a suborbital Hopper.

Send another rescue ship with a rover to pick him up with.

That'll do for now.

I agree with Sirine, the best method is practice. If you're having to walk kilometres, your landings are not controlled enough.

I've always used one of the "objects" that are persistent on the Mun (won't say what they are, in case you haven't found them yet ;) ). They never move and are easy to position in map mode. Even when Squad break the game saves, these stay put!! Practice, practice, practice. Hyperedit makes testing landers a bit easier on the time invested.

Good luck.

I would say pass on trying to rescue your stranded Kerbal with the ship you have just landed as it's too far away. Send that ship back to Kerbin so that your second Kerbal doesn't need rescuing. Build a probe rescue craft to rescue your first Kerbal. That way, if you don't land close enough, you haven't got the possibility of stranding more Kerbals.
