Serial Multiplayer Space Program [0.22+Kethane+KAS]

Recommended Posts

Welcome to the Serial Multiplayer Space Program!

Here, you can cooperate with other players to delevop a space program from its infancy to infinity and beyond! Each player can attempt whatever objective is given in the previous entry, or take on a short mission of their own choosing. Once you are done with that mission, you can show your results here and even pose an objective for the next player. Each mission will receive a score based on what was accomplished, and your score will be the average of the missions you've completed. There is also a poll about this challenge that you can take part in.

Rules:

  1. Everyone who reads the rules and guidelines is allowed to play.
  2. You need to install the required plugins.
  3. To play, simply download the archive and reply to this thread with "I have the file!" - if someone else has the file, you must wait for them to finish; new players will be given priority.
  4. If someone does not post an update within six hours, then someone else may claim the file. The first player to complete it will be the one counted for that mission.
  5. Update the archive when you are finished with your mission, and upload it somewhere.

Required Plugins:

v2.5.0.0

v.0.8

v0.4.4

Guidelines:

  1. Try not to work on a mission without claiming it first, unless the objective includes designing a vessel.
  2. An objective should be possible to complete within a half hour.
  3. You may suggest an alternate objective that someone else may complete instead of the original objective.
  4. The updated archive should include the alarms file, the persistent file, and the craft files in their proper directories. The numbers in the archive name should reflect which mission was last completed (SMSP001 would be the first mission) for consistency. This will prevent issues uploading the file. The proper directories are already setup in the archive, so you can copy the previous one and overwrite whatever files are necessary.
  5. It's no fun if an objective is too restrictive, but your intent should be clear. If you want someone to design a ship for an objective, you should include a *.craft file of one that meets your specifications with the name "EXAMPLE" in the save file.
  6. Don't be afraid to time-warp to a better launch window for your mission. Important events will be mentioned in the list of alarms, so that they are not missed.
  7. Make sure that at least a few other people get a chance to play before you take on an additional mission.
  8. Every ship may be used by anyone for its intended purpose (e.g. fuel depot, tug, rover,...).
  9. Try to optimize part-counts on stations and other vessels that could be used frequently. Since all of our computers have different capabilities, I'd suggest shooting for up to 100 parts on the vessel itself (not including the launch vehicle) just as a reference point, though keep in mind that fewer is usually better.
  10. If you submit an objective to get something specific into orbit, you should include a launch vehicle for it as a subassembly (unless there is already an appropriate one available).
  11. Things that land safely on Kerbin and are recovered can be considered to be "in the hanger" for any roleplaying purposes (refueling, retrofitting, loading payloads,...).
  12. If you usually play with different mods, it may be wise to maintain separate directories in order to prevent conflicts.

If you don't have a lot of time to post your results, you could use this template and just overwrite the text in braces with the data for your mission:

New mission objective: goes here!

Possible questions you may have:

  • Do I need to read every entry before playing? --- No, but you should at least read the previous mission.
  • Didn't we do this before? --- Yes, you may be aware of Hawkinator's almost-multiplayer-pass-along-the-save-file challenge, but the save file suffered from the change to version 0.21, so lets try a new one with what we've learned.
  • How difficult should we make our objectives? --- There is no lower limit on how difficult an objective can be; it could be performing a single burn if you'd like.
  • Why do we only get a few hours? --- A short time limit means that more people can play, and should prevent excessive periods of downtime.
  • Do I have to attempt someone's objective if I play? - No, you could do something completely unrelated if you'd like. If you think their objective was good, you should repost it so that someone else can attempt it though.
  • What do I do with the save file? --- Use something like WinRar or 7Zip to open it, and extract it into your KSP directory.
  • I have something really cool, but I'm worried that it has too many parts... --- Depending on what parts you've used, you can use the Model Node system to drastically reduce part counts (e.g. a complete rover condensed into 5 parts). I can help with this if you are interested.
  • Are we allowed to use other plugins? --- Feel free to use any plugin that does not cause problems sharing the save files.
  • Where can I upload the save file when I'm done with it? --- Try the FileDrop folder I've setup in MediaFire, otherwise you could use something like Dropbox, Google Drive, Filedropper, or any good one you know of.
  • What do I do if I can't accomplish something? --- Make a post to let everyone know you've finished with the file, just like you would if you had completed it. If you made some progress, you can post your save file.
  • This scoring system is bad. --- Let me know how it could be improved.
  • Is there a way to tell if someone is working on their mission? --- The official shared folder will tell you if the file has been downloaded.

Points breakdown(these may change in the future). Each is only counted once per mission (e.g. ten flags is still 10 points).

10 - Completed within six hours

10 - Plant at least one unique flag

10 - Complete an objective

10 - Posting a new objective

15 - Posting a couple pictures or a video of your mission (double points for videos)

15 - Deploying a new asset into orbit (scanner/miner/station/tug/etc.)

30 - Following all five rules

Time bonus: 15 if complete under an hour, 10 if completed between one and two hours, 05 if completed between two and four hours.

Team bonus: 02 per mission between your last one and this one. (up to 10 points)

Mission #001 Complete!

yg7FSirl.png

After installing a new flag, Bill sent up a scanning satellite to investigate what riches Kerbin was hiding from us: turns out it's just some more kethane deposits. It was too much effort to retrieve the satellite, so we're just going to be leaving it there. We disconnected it from its service module so that the interns don't crash it into anything, and we've returned the service module to an equatorial orbit for future use. The launch vehicle was nearly fully-recovered, and should be available for use after the interns are done repairing, painting, and refueling it.

New mission objective: By using the landing rocket. (Not that Mun rover) Return Jeb to Kerbin.

Nice job Sirine :)

I made a few changes to the archive though: removed the part "mumech.MuonDetectorBig" from the *.craft file, changed the folder hierarchy to match the others, and fixed the errors in the persistence file that were caused by the lack of Kethane Pack parts.

For the score, I should clarify that each statement is only counted toward a mission once (i.e. ten flags would still be 5 points). So your score would have been +5 for flags, +10 for completing the previous missions objective, +10 for posting a new objective, and +15 for pictures = 40. However, since I didn't clarify that before I'll still count yours as 45. :)

Mission 004 complete!

Jeb has been safely returned to Kerbin.

Problem is, he's 25KM from the Kerbal Space Center.

Someone bring him the rest of the way home.

Points:

10 - Complete an objective

10 - Posting an objective

15 - Posting a couple pictures or a video of your mission

40 - Following all five rules

Is that 75 points?

Edit: Recalculating! I get double points to "Posting a couple of pictures or a video of your mission. So, 90pts.

@ThreeMartiniLaunch Sorry man. I really don't know that EVA jetpack to command-pod cause you so much trouble.

Actually, you just hit the Shift "all the way", and let Jeb's big head bump on that Command-pod, and press the F, and you are done.

Well, I think I need to refine that mun-lander to a better oriented..."Add that damn ladder!!!".

No worries. I'm sure I sounded far more frustrated than I actually was. In no gravity, I'm actually quite good at EVA. Add some gravity, and I have the same problem I have landing: I'm fumble fingered.

I will say, however, I am not disappointed that the lander met an explosive demise on the surface of Kerbin.

BTW, my original plan was to land Jeb at the Other Space Center - not the one on the island, the one a quarter planet away.

Just turned out that my return set me up for the regular KSC.

I believe the early post bonus assumes you post within two hours of claiming the file. Since your post was two hours and thirteen minutes after claiming the file, I am filing a formal protest.

I'm not sure what Clean up the left-over means. Please elaborate.

All that aside, Well Done! :)
