Buy on Steam or KSP.com?

Personally, I would purchase direct from the KSP site. It's direct, you don't need to mess around with STEAM for it, at all. Pre or Post purchase, and it just downloads and installs...ready to rock and roll. I only play one other game through STEAM, and I wish that I were able to go around STEAM in order to play it.

I for one don't like the idea of KSP auto-updating... a lot of updates break savegames, and I like to maintain clear control of my file structure for that kind of thing.

Also, the devs get more money if you buy directly, even if you transfer to Steam afterwards.

You can turn that off.

You can't transfer KSP to Steam anymore (unless you have bought KSP ages ago).

Topic: I vote for Steam. And you should not care what's better for devs, but what's better for YOU.

If you buy through KSP.com, you can share it with your friends (1). It is also easier to aply mods(2).

1) What part of "DRM-Free" do you not understand? The KSP.exe file in the Kerbal Space Program folder will run without Steam. It's only Steam-generated "appidd:xxxx" links from "Create shortcut" that won't.

2) The folder setup is exactly the same, just with C:\Program Files\Steam\Steamapps\Common on the front. I had a shortcut to the KSP folder on my desktop even before I switched to Steam (Was in C:\Games), so as far as I'm concerned there is no difference.

With steam you get trading cards from the game. Now that may not seem important at all, but you can sell them for ~20 cents a piece. And you can turn off autoupdates and stuff, but you'll be told you have an update the second you log on.

So really, there's no reason not get a steam copy.

if you don't want auto updates than just disable them in the options

KSP.com gets updates earlier or atleast when .21 hit.

Not by any significant amount. The last few updates were released while I was at work. By the time I got home, steam had already updated KSP. It would have taken me longer to log into the store and download/unpack the new version.

While steam takes a percentage of the sales of the games, they do give a percentage of trading cards sales to the devs. If you don't care about them, sell them. If you do, then buy. Either way helps Squad out a little more.
