Modular designs are...

  1. 1. Modular designs are...

    • too heavy for my cpu (too many parts).
    • awesome and useful, thanks to so many applications.
    • ugly, dedicated desings are much better looking.

when tanks are empty it can land on chutes (when not it needs "help" to slow down below 10m/s)

I'm also working on an MPCV. :P In fact, it's already finished. I designed it to be as low cost and practical as possible, but it's for LKO mainly. Comes with a Falcon 9 v1.0 style rocket that is designed to be low cost as possible with a test reusable upper stage.

I too tried to keep the costs down as much as possible, but I just noticed that the Odysseus STS is actually cheaper (if you recover it) and can lift more cargo than the MPCV.

Edit: Never mind, the shuttle costs 15k funds more (forgot that the capsule of the MPCV will also be recovered), but it also can lift 2t more.

Nice.

My MPCV is very similar to yours with two cargo bays and power-landing capsule. One difference is that I have a tank underneath the bays for a cleaner look and universal (1.25m and 2.5m) docking ports on the capsule and service module. Aside from the cargo bays, the design had remained virtually unchanged since 0.20.

I also built a 3.75m version with four long cargo bays for Mun missions.

Using 4 RV-105 RCS Thruster Blocks to dock is too much, all I need is 2 RCS thrusters ;)

Key is right part rotation

Also removed antenna and added tiny docking port, so now I have only 18 parts on MPCV MK 7.1 :)

Wow it looks great... I see you have landing legs and solar panels, my MPCV needs service module, without it after day or two it is dead :)

I posted almost all in this thread, here are some heavy lifters and experiments

Largest 2nd stage I built so far.

just look how high it was over pad and still destroys it :/

it has same 2nd stage as 90 and 100.

And here is Falcon 9, can lift ~12 tons

Falcon 9 heavy, can lift ~41 tons

from few tests it can reach 1500m/s over 22km with ~18.5 tons payload :)

You should post these rockets (and the others) in the launch vehicle showcase thread. They'll get the attention they deserve there. :)

BTW, can you post the downloads to these LVs too?

Thank you, I will post my launchers there and release craft files... soon :)

Here is my Perseus MPCV (MK8 or more) in 3 versions.

All versions have 4000+ electric power, yet no power source, so if you are going for long duration mission add one to service module.

Those are safest manned crafts I have build so far :)

Light:

weight: 6.7t

parts: 21

d/v: 600m/s

engines: 80kN

power landing: starts with full thrust at 1300m

Medium:

weight: 8.2t

parts: 25

d/v: 1000m/s

engines: 120kN

power landing: full thrust at: 1100m

cJ5W8Bbl.png

Heavy:

weight: 9.7t

parts: 27

d/v: 1350m/s

engines: 120kN

power landing: full thrust at: 1500m

If you are new to capsule power landing I suggest medium version for practice. It simply gives you more time, than light version, and have largest TWR.

For few hours LKO mission on different orbits I suggest heavy version, since it shouldn't need any service module with additional d/v or power source.

UPDATE:
