Space Stations not worth anything in .22

Something or anything like this, maybe for every couple hours you get a Science point, going up to 1000Units that can't be sent and must be picked up by a Kerbal (50 or something at a time) and then returned to have any value.

This is a fantastic idea!!!

TBH, I would just be happy with a 2.5 meter part that is exceedingly heavy that needs to be crewed by at least one crew member. It should have a high science cap, high data values, but a low transmission efficiency. It should give data depending on what biome it is passing over and drain lot's of energy.

i think you should be able to do more actual "experiments"

like perhaps you can take the samples you get from the mun or minmus or duna, and take them to the space station and do science to them to get more points?

would give you a good reason to learn to dock too as you'd need missions to send the samples up to the station

Strictly speaking they were not worth anything in .21 and earlier - or better they are worth the same as before: refueling stations, assembly hubs, necessary for a few mods that introduce new aspects to the game ...

Maybe space stations will get another (stock) use in a future update - with resources finally introduced or as a mission goal should such a system be introduced - simply not being THAT useful in regards to science does not invalidate them more than the game not making active use of them since the beginning of KSP.

As of now I would probably built a station in a very inclined orbit to cover as much terrain/biomes as possible. A satellite would be enough, but that is where RP gets back in and some things still require a Kerbal for science. ;)

lets see.......what does the RL ISS do?

Science on earth atmosphere, solar system investigation, and of course, what do worms do when they are in zero g.

Maybe something along those lines. Give the station a long term reason to be orbiting a planet.

Other things that may be interesting.

A station where you can build large ships in space. Except that you must haul the raw materials up from Kerbin to build whatever module you need. Each module would require certain items.....computers, shielding, wiring, and such. Then you have to supply the station with this material and then set up the build which takes x amount of time. When the part is finished, you just attach it to the project ship like you would in VAB.

A station that looks out past the Kerbin solar system and discovers new suns and planets that would be reachable in further builds of the game.

A station built in a planets orbit as a precursor to a base on the planets surface. A midway point between Kerbin and the base.

If anyone has seen the movie 'Moon', we would have a surface mining program. But instead of shooting pods straight back to Kerbin, we must take them up to the station where freighters would return them to Kerbin.

Besides, I would like to see more stock parts to build even fancier spacecraft. different shape fuel tanks, a round shape rod instead of the I beams which have their place but dont really work for antenna extenders. Or better yet, a extendable truss so we can extend antennas like in the Voyager probes.

How about re-skinning the stock parts especially the ones that look like they were built in the 1800s.

K, Im through.....time for more coffee.

A telescope in space could take clearer pictures of planets and the nearest stars. Would be cool to have for either career or sandbox.

Here's a thought.. any craft with science modules or kerbals (status reports) on it will give an amount of science points that will be removed again if the craft is removed/destroyed/reclaimed. The amount of science points depends on its location. Removing these points can let your total go down below 0, and having multiple stations in the same place gives reduced results just like normal science does.

It requires at least one antenna for transmission, any number of science-capable parts, and any one part that has produced power in the orbit you leave the craft at, when you go back to the space center. It also requires a drone or manned capsule of some sort.

Of course, stations could also give additional permanent science points up to a certain maximum per location, for being there for a long time.

I'd love to see some telescopes, by the way. And more science tools of any kind. Give us a bunch of random crap to haul over to the whole galaxy, and give less points for each item. Maybe make some of them really big, so you just take them up into space to scrape together those last few points.

You should be able to make stations near the magic boulder. And start mining it for metal purposes. And learning about how it glows :D

No use? I use my .22 mun base as a science farm if I need a new part of the tree but don't want to do a new mission, not only that, but when your science becomes worthless, just travel to a slightly different part, and more science ensues. That and you can add more parts and sensors to bases and stations and continue using them as science farms. How does that make them useless?

Unmanned permanent probe: gives you a trickle of science, in beginning a generous one, transmitting stored data when the power supply is high enough for transmission + a bit above that. The trickle is deteriorating (how fast depending on the device/location), effectively draining the experiment and removing the current click-fest that is probing.

Manned space station: a set of Kerbals gives you a trickle of science, like the probe, but after they wear off, you can replace the Kerbals with new ones for a new (a bit smaller) trickle. Also, add "data storage" and "materials storage" modules that you can transfer your results into, for deorbiting/later transmission - then when a ship arrives, it can pick up materials for research on the ground.

A station will, in time, become obsolete, but that makes sense. Mir spent 15 years in space, ISS is planned to do 22 years total (but there's some plans to reuse its sections etc).
