I'm having a problem. I don't know if it's RSS or FASA, but I have a Mk. 1 command pod with a heat shield on the bottom. The heat shield burns off before the capsule even starts to exhibit any reentry effects (the orange glow). Before I get down to 70,000 meters, the craft explodes because the heat shield is completely gone.

I watched the video and it's something that I will consider, once I ever go that far out. What I like is that it adds new things like the unexpected orbits of Neptunian moons.

What about Ceres, Vesta etc? I personally find the asteroid belt at least as important as a whole bunch of moons on Neptune. Also because there is still new research going on in our lifetimes, Uranus/Neptune is what we got from Voyager and that's that.

Ceres and Vesta are planned for the future. I wanted to add Neptune's moons because 1) it is the only gas giant which has a number of moons small enough that I can add them all 2) It offers a new challenge and reason to go there and 3) these moons are so obscure that nobody would know what they are otherwise. I learned a lot making them, so others probably will sending missions to them.

This mod is pretty much impossible to play without a update of the Realism overhaul mod.

With the Sol system version or the 10x Kerbol system version it is extremely difficult without Realism overhaul.

I recommend looking into the 6.4x version of the Kerbol system. It increases the difficulty in a similar manner but you don't have to increase the size of anything. You can also use the ISP difficulty scaler.

I was just thinking that.

Is there a FAQ or something on how to survive re-entry with the stock heat shields? Or is that basically just impossible?

Nobody else is having this problem? Not being able to return from orbit is a pretty huge problem.

I have the same problem.

I'm not able to get anything returned from space. Heat shields are worthless, even a very shallow airbrake at 100km burns out the heat shield.

I don't want to trim down the entire heat effect, does someone know how to make the head shield stronger?

It's definitely RSS. It's impossible to reenter. The only other mod I have installed is MechJeb. I can't get below 80,000 meters without the craft exploding. The heat shield is completely gone by 90,000 meters.

Same problem with reentry. even boosted the ablator on the shield 10x stock value with no success.

For me, the heat shield over-temps before it entirely runs out of ablator. Then it blows up. When it does blow up, the entire ship also blows up. So when i tried putting multiple heat shields on, it didn't help. the first one blew up and so the ship blew up, even though there were three or so more heat shields behind it, ready to take over. So I tried to detach the heat shield, but of course the air just pinned it to the bottom of the stack. And when it blew up, the ship blew up. Very frustrating.

I de-installed RSS.

My first try the abator went to zero then boom, so that's what made me think of trying to up the amount in case that would work as a quick and dirty fix for now. Unfortunately trying that resulted in the same problem you had, boom from overheating before the ablator ran down. Also going without RSS until a fix is figured out to allow reentry.

I have the same problem. RSS, FAR and real fuels installed.

I tried a command pod equipped with 12 heatshields. 150kmx80km reentry orbit - the (detached) launch rocket completely desintegrated at 96 km (first parts exploded at 100 km at orbital speed)

pod 1st heat shield ablator was half depleted at 88km with still 7440 m/s

pod 1st heat shield exploded at 82km with 7420 m/s

pod 2nd heat shield ablator was half depleted at 77 km with 7399 m/s

pod 2nd heat shield (as well as all other shields + pod) explodes at 73 km with 7358 m/s

deceleration at that point aproximately 1 m/s²
