Transferring samples between pods

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

So I have unlocked the tiny lander can and the docking port.

Now I can get back to my pre .22 ways of doing apollo style for landings. However I wanted to know wether I can transfer samples from the lander can to the command module, so I can collect the science back on kerbin or if I am forced to transmit if I am not gonna return the lander can?

Thanks for the quick answers. I am yet to try it, I will need to make a craft first :) But I doubt the EVA thing will work as the samples would be stored in the lander can when I get back inside following the surface EVA. No way to actually get in the command pod first as it would be in orbit at this stage. Unless I use a seat instead of a lander can?

I bet the best thing is to try and figure it out... And in the worst case scenario transmitting wouldnt be to bad, but Id rather know before I start designing my craft as I would have to make sure the lander can itself can transmit so I can max out the samples while im on the surface

Great idea on using the seat! I'll have to test these various scenarios when I get home. It would be ironic if people started including multiple 1 person pods instead of a 3 person pod so they can store more samples... and adding a chair so a kerbal can carry that last extra sample themselves.

I'll test this in about an hour when I get home... I'm curious and it's pretty simple to make a ship with a few command pods and EVA on the launchpad.

Not really my idea :P I have seen plenty on youtube about 'landers' which are lander can free ;) My only problem with that is that I was thinking of doing a duna mission, and even if it survives atmospheric entry (not sure about but it could knowing the little flaws of the game) it wouldnt be very realistic... It is fine however for bodies with no atmosphere.

Ive decided to create a lander with enough power and an antenna to transmit the data I get on the surface as, after thinking a little bit, it will be as good as returning the data on kerbin (redoing everything until its maxed out)

If you are not adverse to mods, there is one that has small storage boxes (..thought for a sec it was KAS, but after smacking my head on the wall to remember, I now realized its The 'Radial Experiment Storage Container' By Talisar (I have it on just about every flight now..)) that you can 'load' your EVA+Soilsamples in before you enter the cabinproper. You could then fix them on an transferable part (say a bigger circular battery or an empty frame (with a dockingport on itoffcource)) that gets switched over from lander to returnvehicle at same time as the Kerbonauts.

I tested and it will not let your retrieve the reports. But; if you land and then ride the command seat for the return trip (instead of boarding a pod) they will still be carried by the kerbal himself. So you could then leave the seat when you rendevous and go straight to the interplanetary command module to load them and return them home. This has a slight "added" advantage that perhaps you would not have to actually dock. You could rendevous and simply EVA your kerbal to the new vessel...

Thanks everyone and especially Rodea because you helped me find a solution!

I will change my post to answered and here is what to do:

- install both KAS and 'Radial Experiment Storage Container'

- edit the cfg for the experiment storage container so that it is KAS grabbable

- perform the mission with the container on the lander and when you dock back to the command module in orbit, transfer the storage container onto your CM

:)
