2 Stage Mun landing

Recommended Posts

In this challenge, you have to safely land on the Mun using only 2 stages!

Rules:

1. Only 2 stages! (Each stage must only have 1 part!) that means only 2 parts can come off your ship when you go there! (anything in utilities/control tabs do not count as a part unless there is a tie.

2. Your ship cant take any damage!

3. Your Kerbal has to plant a flag on the Mun to win. If more then two people make it, whoever has the least parts wins

4. Stock parts only!

5. If you make it back you get $5000 imaginary dollars! (in not sure if this part is possible)

6. YES THIS IS POSSIBLE!

7. Post pics/vids of your ship and adventures!

8. The decoppler dose not count, neither the the rocket, sorry about not explaining that. but you cant have more then one rocket!

9. a part is anything you can click on in the VAB!

score so far

1 5thHorseman with 6 parts

I think you'll have to clarify rule #1. 2 stages and 2 parts are entirely different things. If only 2 parts are allowed to be decoupled that would mean a single fuel tank and its fuel line. Is that how you intended this challenge, a single drop tank?

If you mean two staging events, as in two decouplers, that would be an entirely different thing.

As for #6, yes it's possible. It's almost not even challenging if you know how to make SSTOs, or if your "2 stages" rule is for stages and not individual parts.

Each stage must only have 1 part except the last part, batteries/electronics don,t count as a part except in the event of a tie and pretty much everything in the control/utilities section.

So basically, you can have 2 engines/fuel tanks/structural parts/science parts decouple from your ship. Yeah, no. You're gonna have a hard time getting to the Mun only being able to decouple an engine and its one fuel tank.

Maybe you should really think through the rules first. A normal stage needs at least three parts - fuel tank, engine, and decoupler. Unless you can get to the mun using decoupler impulse only. That would be really a challenge.

Fuel pipe counts as a part or not? What about struts?

At present I believe the sure-fire approach is to build a SSTM. The final part doesn't count, right? So if I don't stage at all it's alright. There were a few nice designs for hard mode of recent Reddit SSTO challenge...

I'm in the midst of a 6-part run, where I drop an orange tank and Skipper and take the other 4 parts (to be revealed later) to the Mun and back. I'm working on the landing part now but I should have plenty of Delta V. Not sure if I can land back on Kerbin yet but I *could* make it 7 parts and add a parachute.

Technically this is a failure because I damaged the craft. But after a dozen tries and quite literally hitting the ground with 0 velocity (plus or minus 1 m/s) and 0 fuel (plus or minus 0 fuel), the ship fell over and the fuel tank exploded.

But when I touched the ground the ship was intact.

I may try this again with my 7th part a parachute, but it was pretty trying and I'm not sure I want to go through it again :)

Oh, and I should say:

I have no idea what this means:

(Each stage must only have 1 part!) that means only 2 parts can come off your ship when you go there! (anything in utilities/control tabs do not count as a part unless there is a tie.

And this clarification just confused me more:

Each stage must only have 1 part except the last part, batteries/electronics don,t count as a part except in the event of a tie and pretty much everything in the control/utilities section.

So I just made my ship with as few parts as I could and made sure the launcher stage only had 2 parts.

I think the problem is you're using the word "part" to mean at least 2 different things. A "part" is anything you can select in the VAB. You should reword the challenge so that any time the word "part" is in there, you mean exactly that.

It has already been shown in the past that the minimum number of parts is five:

command pod + fuel tank + LV-N

- no decoupler -

orange fuel tank + Skipper engine

The heat produced by the LV-N is used to destroy the orange tank when empty, and thus stage.

There you go.

So assuming my ship otherwise wins (if my "parts" match what the OP meant by "parts"), my addition of a decoupler due to the requirement to not damage anything should mean that 6 parts is the absolute minimum here.

Yup, sorry I overlooked the no damage part. Happy Dia De Muertos!
