My first riddle on here!

One night at around midnight, a wealthy business man was going to board a plane, when a night guard cam running up to him.

"Please don't go on that plane! I just had a dream that it'll crash!"

The man believed him, and he wasn't needed at his destination for another week.

Later that night, the plane indeed crash. There were no survivors.

The man thanked the night guard, but he was fired shortly afterwards.

Why?

Who was fired? The man or the guard?

Was the guard discovered to be somehow responsible for the plane crash and was fired because of that?

Or did the company the man worked or pay for his ticket, so he was fired for missing the flight? (Stranger things have happened)

The plane crashed into the building the night guard was responsible for. With no building left to guard, it's natural the night guard lost his job. Though I suppose strictly speaking he was made redundant / laid off, not fired.

I was NOT sleeping on the job!

Kerbals place you in a glass sphere in outer space. The sphere is held fifteen feet away from a spaceship by a rigid steel rod. Your captors will bring you back to Earth and set you free if you can manage to get inside an open hatch in the ship's side. In the sphere, you have a deck of playing cards and a small rodent. You have no spacesuit. What is your best strategy for freedom?

Okay, working this one through:

In theory it's possible to survive and stay conscious for a short time in space, maybe 30 seconds?

So you'd have to somehow smash the glass and propel yourself towards the hatch, and if you were quick enough you'd survive.

The steel rod and outside of the glass would presumably be too hot or cold to safely touch.

I can't think of an answer that uses everything given in the riddle, so I'll make a joke answer:

After procrastinating for ages you decide it's now or never so, heart in your mouth, you smash the glass with a club. You then throw big spades away from the ship, propelling you towards it while you watch the diamonds in the sky. After entering the hatch, you close the airlock and say "Ha! I am the King/Queen of space! I Aced that! Oops, I forgot Jack the rodent..."

Your first answer is actually close enough to being correct that I'll give it to you.

The rodent and playing cards are red herrings. Break the sphere and propel yourself to the open hatch, hope you can close it before you die.

I must admit I see a problem. Any glass sphere strong enough to hold a breathable pressure within, when it's vacuum outside, is going to be tough to break.

Not necessarily. The glass sphere is holding pressure, so it's already under tension. Depending on how thick/strong the glass is, it may already be near breaking tension and not that hard to break. And given that glass under stress wil shatter once cracked, that makes it easier to get out than if it were plastic, which wouldn't shatter.

Now, a glass sphere with lower pressure inside than outside would be much tougher, as you would have to overcome the pressure outside as well as the strength of the glass. Kind of like trying to open a car door underwater, before the inside filled with water.

It's been over 3 days and a new riddle has not been posted. The thread rules state that the floor is now open. I hereby claim the floor.

I bring chaos into order, but I may stop at a border.

Those with hideous faces find I take them places.

From a field or from plastic, at what I do I'm fantastic,

But those in sport don't need me for it.

To some I'm friend but to others I'm foe,

And you'll find me most places you go.

What Am I?
