PorkWorks dev thread [Habitat Pack] [SpaceplanePlus]

The only problem with a closed fairing is that you can't right-click on the enclosed parts while you're in flight. So if you want to transfer fuel or change the probe core settings, you're out of luck. The cargo bays are better, because you can open them in flight for access.

This is sort of what I do now. I use the Mk2>1.25m adapter, then put the 1.25m nosecone from B9 on it. But it's awkward. The black/white color division doesn't match, and the curves don't match up well either. It sounds like a nice 1.25m nosecone that matched well with the shape and texture of the Mk2 adapters would be a really flexible solution.

Actually, you can get to stuff that is hidden inside a craft. The camera can clip through parts. Personally I would rather a really short segment of a MK2 part for a drone core, it would reduce part count, and if you need a nosecone, just use one of the adaptors.

Am i the only one that periodically checks this thread only looking for update on inflatable habs? :)

Oh please, I was checking this thread for updates on inflatable habs before it became fashionable to check this thread for inflatable habs!

Ahhh this brings back memories.... or flashbacks rather, to launches gone bad and me trying to sneak the camera into the fairing to click on something that was causing the launch to go bad so I could stop it from causing the launch to go bad. Fun times.... fun times.

Yeah, which is a problem that is solved by making the drone core part just a really short MK2 segment. PJ could literally just remap a MK2 fuselage model, and make it shorter, then re-export it and do the config. You wouldn't even need to do another texture, you would just have to reference it from another folder.

I concur with short mk2 segment.

If we get one, it would be really awesome to make docking port the "innards" (telescoping part & rcs tanks) - which you just place inside this mk2 section.

This will also mean that with longer cargo bays I could place cargo, drop tank & this docking port machinery all in single long bay.

This way I don't have to change spaceplane length/balance if, for example, I want to run mission with extended range (more drop tank) and I don't need docking port for it.

I currently use my own "docking adapter", built of struts, rcs tanks & port - but it doesn't telescope :( I don't really want to install infernal robotics just for this - I am already almost out of RAM.

I also used standard 1.25 inline docking port before, but its too heavy, since it contains own outer fuselage structure. Also while it does telescope, but to very small amount :(

Nope. :) I'm still hoping for that "large centrifuge" that was mentioned earlier - even if kerbals can fit into the existing one, I still want a version with a 2m hub to fit my IPV(s)!

(doubling the rescale modifier is a quick fix, but that results in a double-sized hatch...)

Well, I'm terrible at SSTO piloting, but I built an awesome shuttle with your parts, Porkchop!

This was after achieving orbit (barely), docking with my space station, and deorbiting about 100Km past the KSC. She turned around and landed without any issues! Jeb and Bill were very excited to not die today.

Note: if you are wondering how I built a shuttle, I present to you the KSO-2 Kanaka!

If you really like shuttles, but want to make it more customizable, you should check out Space Shuttle Engines by dtobi. The KSO art style doesn't really fit with stock either, though it does fit quite well with SS+.

I have an idea for Spaceplane Plus! A range of parts for making Customisable and modular KSOs. A bunch of parts that make the KSO less of a single ship made out of parts that you'll never use to it's own system. Or maybe I'll just wait and see if the creator of KSO would do that.

You know, KSO is something completely different from SP+. It's wildly different in both intended use and art style. Also, I'm not sure how Helldiver would react if Porkjet started making parts for his shuttle.

Why would it matter to Helldiver if Porkjet made parts to work with KSO (not that anyone would, KSO parts are SO non interchangeable with anything else)?

Lots. Symmetric things like the pedals, arm things, part of the belt share their pixels. Also the thing isnt extremely high res to begin with, but it does the job I think

Porkjet, I'm enjoying your mods immensely! Your Models and Textures are beautiful, and I love how you try to keep to to a stock-alike aesthetic. I've been wanting to do a space plane parts pack for a while but my modeling is crap, and frankly I'm totally overwhelmed by it all. Here is some crappy MS Paint sketches I just did to show you some of the ideas I had in mind. These are parts I would like to build with, and if they spark your imagination, i would love to see your attempt at them or something similar!

We really need a 2.5 meter cockpit section!

G26rDck.png

A 2 kerbal capacity would be reasonable. I know the Mk3 is supposed to fill this niche, but with the mk3 fuselage being so underdeveloped, and TonouTorpedo seemingly unlikely to re-upload his efforts, I think this would be very appreciated. This part would also marry nicely with some of the fuselage sections in the KAX pack. This one steps down to a 1.25 meter nose section.

A nice pointy nose cone with a hypersonic-look would be fantastic.

vjv15nN.png

The structural nosecone in the game doesn't really give an impression (accurate or not) of the hypersonic speeds that an air-breathing SSTO spaceplane would need to reach in order to achieve orbit. I've been rotating the game's tail section around to point forward with mixed results.

I think a line of Conformal Fuel Tanks would be useful and make for some really pretty space planes and Rockets.

j6q9VKv.png

With a surface attachment point in the deepest part of the curve, a 1.25 meter section would wrap nicely around 1.25 meter round tanks, and would clip slightly into 2.5 meter parts and flat sections to achieve a seamless appearance.

Something similar could be done with a Blended Wing section.

KqdtH0P.png

My thinking was a part that had big lift in trade for big drag and weight. This would help larger designs avoid the ridiculous wing spamming that is necessary to make them perform. With a large internal volume it would also be a place to clip Monopropellant, batteries, small fuel tanks, etc without feeling like you are completely cheating. Heck, it would be a good place to clip in a bunch of winglets for even more lift if it doesn't bother you!

To those with more mod knowledge than me, I apologize if these ideas have been done before. I'm not very familiar with B9, for instance, because I'm not a big fan of the aesthetic.

@Porkjet: nice seat :)

That's impressive work. It's much better looking and has a smaller memory footprint.

right but does it really matter regarding the plane parts memory footprint ? (quite too high-res tex, the price to pay for the gorgeous tex)
