How are babies made?

I saw this question on the KSP facebook page, and decided to answer it. And now I decided to share the answer here, since it may actually be true and not some bull I spouted out after a boring work day.

When a Kerbal hits a hard surface with enough force, the cloud created on impact is actually thousands of tiny Kerbalspores released from the spore-sacks. Each one will quickly mature into a fully fledged Kerbal. It is not uncommon for one of these spores to inherit the characteristics of its spore-bearer (thus leading to 'cloned' kerbals).

Due to the high mortality rate of Kerbals, this was the only way evolution could keep them alive long enough to venture into space.

Jeb: ...I don't feel a thing *turns his head* OH MY KOD!!!!!

Bob: I'll call the doctor.

Jeb: high there little clone of me what's your name?

Jeb 2: Jeb.

I think Kerbals are trigendered mammals.

I do not think they are mammals, instead they are highly evolved plants. This explains why they are green and only need snacks, because exposure to the sun gives them their base needs: Photosynthesis. It also falls in line with the Spore idea.

Sounds like Kerbals have evolved from Warhammer 40k Orcs. Which is a good thing.

Maybe Kerbals are like the Moties from the book The Mote in the God's Eye. Kerbals might; throughout their lifetimes alternate between being male and female. After giving birth, a female Kerbal reverts back to a male and will impregnate others until it changes back into a female after a certain period of time. Now a female again, the Kerbal only has a specific amount of time to become pregnant or it will die from hormone imbalance. Having children is the only way for Kerbals to ensure their survival. This of course creates a serious overpopulation problem.

While the Mote civilization didn't have a solution for population control besides total war and collapse of civilization every few thousand years, the Kerbals have solved the issue by simply giving every Kerbal a job at the KSC. This is why the KSC is the only sign of civilization on Kerbin. At any given time, the population of Kerbin is limited to less than a few hundred. Any extras are shot off into space where they become somebody else's problem. :D

While I believe there are male and female gendered kerbals, in my experience, actual reproduction involves a symboict relationship between Kerbals and cockpits.

Before long, Matdas had produced many children.

those excellent people are grinding up our little friends and selling them to unsuspecting customers at a cheap pricetag... :(

now that i think of it, i always wondered about that rocketfuel off-tase in our food...
