Help please?

Recommended Posts

Hey, I'm new to KSP (and the forum, so please don't shout if this is in the wrong place or something) and I've been playing KSP with the interstellar mod (The one with the super cool magic rain engines and whatnot) an I've been having a few problems, and I was wondering if I could get some help. The main problem I've had is that whenever I launch a ship, it tilts. Now, I would like to just say now that I'm playing on career, so as far as I know SAS is of the table. I've managed to get one or two small ships out of the atmosphere, and I did some sciencey things with em, so I have some science. I have looked EVERYWHERE for a solution, and I've check everything from fuel distribution to center of mass, and so far I've had no luck finding an answer, and I was wondering if someone could lend a hand?

The first and most important question: does this happen without the mod installed? Second question: what do you mean by "it tilts"? Does it lurch suddenly and then hold that heading? Something could be breaking (hit F3 to see the failure report), or maybe the ship is too large to rest on the pad without launch clamps. If it tilts slowly while climbing, it may simply be too big for the steering power currently available from capsule, fins, and engine gimbals.

As far as I can tell, it happens with or without the mod, though I origionaly made a very small ship, so I may be wrong. And by tilt I mean that after 30 seconds, it's at a 90 degree angle (worst case). And I have no one idea what a gimble does, but it sounds like a sesame street character. I could send a pic, but it could take a while.

All command pods have SAS capability; they've been that way since 0.22 unless I'm mistaken. Just hit the "T" key before you launch and you should still be able to fly straight. You'll need to push the "F" key for momentary SAS toggling if you make any directional changes.

It sounds like you simply don't have enough steering authority for the size of the ship in question. This authority is provided by 4 kinds of devices: SAS from capsules and reaction wheels (though you said you don't have the reaction wheels yet), steerable fins (not all of them are, so check their VAB descriptions), RCS (which works only poorly in atmosphere), and engines which have a pivoting "gimbal" mount and therefore have "thrust vectoring" capability as listed in their VAB descriptions. Very small ships can get by with nothing but the capsule's inherent SAS, but as your design gets larger, you'll need to add more of the other devices to retain control.

either your pod/probe has not enough torque,or center of thrust is not inline with center of mass.Or something breaks at launch.OR you are going really fast.

why do you even install mods if you don't know how to play the game ;.;

I would point out that if the 'tilt' gets progressively worse as you climb then my suspect would be an erroneous fuel-line. That produces weight imbalance scary fast as is usually the culprit if my designs pitch that fast.

With that said however, flying crooked through the first 10km will also lead to flips and tumbles as your direction of travel departs significantly from the direction you are actually pointing. So it could be a knock-on of a much simpler issue. Definately check f3, if a radial tank breaks when the physics kicks in on the pad, yet is still carried with you due to strutting, well it wont drain fuel and leads very rapidly to imbalance.

A photo would help us figure what is going on with your ship. Save a screenshot with F1, locate it in the KSP Save folder, convert to jpg, and post on a free account on imgur photo sharing service.

Build simple, Smaller efficient designs will go a long way in Career.
