[WIP] MSI's Infernal Robotics - Model Rework (v02 Pre-Release Beta)

The existing Right-Angled Rotatrons would work perfectly for that I think :)

I can see that. I'll fiddle around with them and see if I can't pull what I am looking for. How are the foldatrons coming? Any eta on their release?

Slowly and No :P. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to cut back on my Kerbal activities for the next few weeks due to work commitments (writing academic papers etc). I'll try to do bits and pieces when I can, but don't know when they'll be done.

A Question: After the foldatron set, what would people like to see me work on next? I know a number of people asked for an expanded structural set, but there's also phoenix trusses, translational parts, and even 2.5m/1.25m pivotron parts (like these below). Of course I reserve the right to go with whatever I have inspiration for first :P

In the meantime though, if people could show off the current set of parts in action that would be great! Maybe it will help me identify gaps in the current lineup of parts.

Translational parts, for sure. Give me gantry rails, the normal rails and pistons so the set can take one step closer to completion (if the idea is to replace IR parts, not just expand on them).

I can't think of any part suggestions aside from those that you've already made/designed though. Aside from free-moving hinges but they'd only really be useful once KSP stops using the tree-based craft construction and not a looped method etc...

Well I personally would say, I would love to see an first textured complete release package ;)

Maybe not with every part possible but with the cool stuff.

I would love to see translational parts - with the current selection of parts I've been able to do everything I wanted to in terms of spinning stuff around, though there have been a few times where some sliding gantries or pistons would have really come in handy.

So um, I should have been working as mentioned above ... but look, Extendatrons!

Unlike past previews I've done, I'm a lot happier with this design. It fits in better with the unified feel I'm going for, whilst still allowing the stackable-ness. Believe me, this is ridiculously hard to model for, especially with a cubed root scaling (×0.7937005) between each telescopic piston size!

Even without texture, they look extremly nice. Like a lot of steel and aluminium.

Nice! Does that right-angle extendatron allow attachments on both ends?

Yep :D. Seemed silly not to make that possible.

Making robotics parts does have it's advantages :P. Whether the final colours will match this is something to be decided later, but I'm definitely keen on having a clean look to all the parts.

Just ignore.....

:sealed: I have difficulty ignoring those kinds of things.

Could you make a version of it that doesn't rely on magic or wormholes?

It looks like they clip not only through whatever they're attached to but through eachother as well.

Considering the original IR parts behave in the same way.. I don't know how feasible that would be. They're telescopic piston, they have to have the assembly hidden somewhere. The only way I can see of doing this is to create another part specifically for them - a stack mounted low profile cylinder with cutouts the pistons could retract into. But considering that's just adding a part because you "have difficulty ignoring those kind of things", personally, I'd suggest clipping them into the fuel tank (though from memory, they don't even require clipping to be on) and removing enough fuel to compensate. Just over half should do it, I think.. enough to say 'yep, there's enough space in there to house the retracted pistons'.

Kipard, if you look back a page you'll see that there's also a normal piston that doesn't clip inside other objects. If there's a demand I could make a half length telescopic piston, but I'm not sure how useful that would be.

I should say, this is one of the reasons for the foldatron parts, as some people have pointed out that they want translation, but don't have space in there craft for a telescopic piston.

I'm sorry but there's just very little actual content in that post.

Fair enough. As long as there's something like that.

Just to clarify matters, here's 3 other ways to build a similar craft, with either less or no part clipping.

Edit: I plan to look back at the Foldatron solution, as I think I could add a bit more usefullness to the currently planned line-up of parts. This won't reduce the total amount, merely change the roles of some of the parts.
