Anyone interested in doing a HotRockets! config for BobCat's Soyuz?

Ignore the side flames for now (I'm trying to get him to do the verniers, though... :) ).

No, I was quoting your post and talking to Nazari1382.

SmokeScreen has modulation curves for some settings, but not for the ones I added.

For instance, I think making randomInitalVelocityOffsetMaxRadius a curve would allow exhaust to appear underexpanded (higher randomInitalVelocityOffsetMaxRadius) at lower pressures.

RandomInitialVelocityOffsetMaxRadius seems to be quite useful, but currently we can use scale & size & grow curve to ... get some similar (no it's actually not) effect.

Exhaust spreading widely is actually pretty unrealistic for upper stage engines. The most efficient engines have the exhaust going straight back so that the force (the 'equal and opposite reaction') is straight forwards. Though this mod is more about style than realism so it doesn't really matter :)

Hmm, for upper stage engine nozzles, though they are designed with much larger nozzle ratio, the under-expansion still exists since it's impossible to have a nozzle with infinite nozzle ratio... and yes I like that style, which has been seen in many demonstration videos made by NASA.

Can you point me towards which mod that is? I'm guessing it's the historical rockets mod?

Frankly I'm a tad burnt out doing configs for new mods at the moment (it's mostly just a bunch of trial and error and can get tedious). My current project is trying to tackle how to integrate HotRockets and KSPI but if I need a change of pace I'll take a look at the Soyuz mod :)

It's the Soviet Pack mod. The historical Rockets 'mod' isn't actually a mod, but a series of them.

Im going to ask a stupid question here (just looking for confirmation)

Im gathering with the latest release of HotRockets its up to the individual to write (or borrow) there own configuration files for custom effects? As when I install hot rockets I have no effects what so ever. (tested with my current mods and on a fresh install)

If the above "stupid" questions is correct has anyone put together a list of others config files as to be honest Im lazy and also dont have the smarts to write (or understand) my own config files.

It would be really nice to be able to just install and play without having to configure the effects.

You're downloading the newest copy on spaceport and extracting everything in the zip to the GameData folder?

That's the idea.

Something broke. For some reason the ModuleManager file for this has the old thrust values. So things with changed thrust values like the ion engine keep their old ones.

Wrong - download the newest version of the mod.

Yeah i have been it also could be because im using [.23] KSP Mod Pack Manager (Standalone) to "manage" all the mods I use, when using that program it asks where to extract the files to and I always select the GameData Folder.

I might try a clean install and extract HotRockets the old fashioned way:). I have had some previous issues when having to extract to a specific folder i.e. Kerbal Engineer but that works fine when using ModpackManager when the GameData folder is selected.

Im suspecting in hindsight this might be the issue will let you know.

Thanks Nazari

Would that be possible to change some NovaPunch engines to look like this?:

Some of the engines there were based on real engines that burn hydrogen+LOX, but HotRockets makes them all look like they're using kerosene+LOX.

I'm not getting a flame on anything at all. But I also have FAR installed... so that might be it.

The Poodle was changed to a more "orbital engine" exhaust after all the screens on the OP were made. It almost looks like just smoke coming from the engine, but that's intentional. You can read about it by going back through the thread if you want, but basically it's a bit more realistic given the Poodle's role in the game.

Hey Nazari,

Since 0.23.5 recently added more vanilla smokescreen-esque effects, and there are people (myself included) who can't use smokescreen due to lag problems, but still want the rocket flames, would it be possible for you to make an alternate config that keeps the new vanilla smoke fx but adds the new rocket flames? Basically have a version with just the flames and a version with smokescreen integrated. This would be really awesome as I just can't handle the smokescreen fx. :(

I am also getting significant graphical slowdown if I launch anything using the SmokeScreen effects

I'm pretty sure it's not my computer though unless something to do with SmokeScreen vs 23.5 vs nVidia GPU's ?

I'm assuming that what you want is shock diamonds, yes?

No, I want a fainter, more orange, visibly transparent flame. Shock diamonds would be nice, but what I really want is the "feel" of a hydroLOX engine, as opposed to them being all keroLOX.

Isn't that orange color intentionally given by adding some "additives" into the fuel? Pure hydroLOX flame should be quite transparent and white, might be only a little blue-ish I guess?

What's really needed is for me to add a few config option in SmokeScreen to disable some of the more expensive effect for those whose computer can't handle it.

I'm running an i7-4771 with a GTX680SC and everything runs fine until I fire a SRB, I'm not sure how much more I could possibly need

Sure the video card might not be a TITAN Black, but it's hardly a slouch?

(Edit) This has only been happening since 23.5, prior performance was fine
