The little Soyuz that could, *rebuilt lower stages*

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I recently finished my MIR station and had made a little Soyuz-FG rocket to take the single kerbal TMA spacecraft up to the MIR.

I had some time and I improved the aesthetics and added fairings.

Putting a sleek faring on this thing seemed impossible at first. The TMA spacecraft is the same width as the stage below...

I was trying to come up with a faring that split into two halves. It drove me nuts and turned out to not be possible with the space I had and to have it keep a low profile

in relation the lower stage.

So I decided to have it release as a single piece vertically. That may sound risky but after 40+ launches there is 0 risk of striking the released faring.

I also had to add different solar panels to allow for the fairing, which is very, very close to the payload. As a concequence of this the TMA looks nicer now too.

Here are some pics and two videos.

Here is a video show the new boosters and fairing separating:

And heres one showing the new launch escape system, I like this one:):

There it is.

Thanks for looking!

FLIGHT INSTRUCTIONS

-Throttle up to max

-Hit space and when you reach 200 mps start a gentle turn east to 55 degrees

-separate booster when depleted then fairing

-turn to 45 degrees

-when second stage reaches last little green bar of fuel activate next stage with is the hot staging

-separate second stage when empty

-Turn to 35 degrees and burn up to 110,000

-coast to ap

-complete the orbit and ditch third stage

-press action group 1 to deploy solar panels

TO DEORBIT

-use the Soyuz TMA single engine to reduce speed and enter the atmosphere

-separate the tri-modules around 70k m

-deploy chutes when not on fire

-fire landing thrusters 3M from the ground

Really, really nice! Will try it out later. :)

What is the purpose of the mono - propellant tanks on the boosters, though?

Thanks Woopert, give it a go and report back.

I put them there as it looks a bit like the colours of the real one, I did the same for the third stage:

I like it, especially what you did with the monopropellant tanks. There is one small visual tweak that would improve it, if you can manage it with the necessary fuel levels. Basically, the pointy bits of the aircraft tails should end at the FL-A5 adapters on the core, rather than above the structural fuselages.

HI Gus,

Thanks for that although it leaves me a little confused. Are you referring to the hot stage gap or the little fins on the boosters? As I don't see how either

would affect fuel requirements?

I will add that I removed a LOT of fuel as she had so much DV it could get to the MUN! Which it may do soon!

What I meant is that the Boosters should be shorter, which might affect your fuel levels.

Riiight, yeah I can see that. I could make them shorter and just not feed into the central stage. Then just add more to the core.

I will get to work on this!

Just outta curiosity, did you empty the RCS tanks on the boosters? Could give you a little more Dv. :)

Hi Astro, yep emptied those. I filled the tanks to full and I got the TMA to slingshot around the mun at 5,000m and reenter Kerbin atmosphere.

At present to get into a 110,000 or there abouts orbit I had to remove quite a lot of fuel as there was too much dv!

I think I can deliver crew to the ISS and return them safely back to Earth.

I know I can deliver crew to the ISS and return them safely back to Earth!

In a bit of seriousness, nice Soyuz! Never seen the solar panel used like that before! :)

LOL But I love tiny single kerbal craft!

I might change my name to the astrohermit.

Some launch clamps would be a nice addition.

Agreed. I have redesigned the boosters to look more like the real ones and it now has the correct number of engines.

Just gotta squeeze every bit of weight out of it!

Ok here are some pictures of the updates I have made. It now has the correct engine number and placement.

I removed the old ASAS module and replaced it with a reaction wheel.

I changed the 'bump' at the top of the boosters to reduce the part count by around 32.

I still need to tweak it to get into orbit with those little boosters and fewer engines.

nice Soyuz ... working too on the Mini one.kerbal-soyuz again. Soyuz-1 (2.1v) is allready done, now i rework my Sputnikluncher, maybe Vostok and normal Soyuz ... oh and Soyuz 2-3 :D

Cool! I look forward to seeing them.

hrm ... sadly imgeshack is going to have a pricetag ... now i need to look for a different picturehoster ...

but i can sent you the craft-file for the Soyuz-1 ^^ just for testing :P

Imgur should work, it's really simple, hence why their slogan is "The Simple Image Sharer". ;)

ha thanks a lot ! time for loooong albums voll of KSP glory ...

here a test:

[stock] Soyuz 1 (Soyuz 2.1v)

able to put around 2 tones into LKO, my rocket has a volga upperstage and a deep space probe underneath the fairings. and yes ... thats a NK-33 look-a-like at the bottom :P
