In Honor Of The Late Whackjob....

I am now following my most ambitious project yet.

It is time.....

To....

Build an orbital elevator on the Mun! I've set an height of 3KM as the "shortest possible height", and am considering heights of up to 20KM for the elevator.

The main structure of the elevator would be tanks, but there would be lots of ladders and facilities for extracting Munar material with Extraplanetary launchpad.

I have decided to name the elevator the Whack, and the proposed surronding area the "Job".

So, any idea of how to get this thing working? My first attempt resulted in a frozen screen and a restart; and it corrupted my save. So no, no pictures.

I'd go for Gilly. It alows you to reduce the base diameter and you don't need lots of height to "jump" off and orbit with RCS.

gilly is a bit too far, but I'd say the best bet would be minmus's "greater flats", would be the best, its very flat, has low gravity (but not gilly low) and has a smaller radius. Biggest thing of all with minmus is that its not that far from Kerbin..

But 2KM on Minmus will do.

I'm looking forward to seeing this. But if you think that 3km is to short, go for 42.14km on Gilly. That's the height for a gillystationary orbit, so you could put some kethane bases on the surface, use rovers to get the fuel you mined to your elevator and you can use it as an infinite refueling station.

I think that's 100% graphics. I wouldn't be surprised if trying to get around the max physics distance by plugin would result in either disappointing nothings or massive explosions scattering debris across the universe.

Romfarer's dlls by default set the physics bubble radius to 100km. I used to use the docking cam, and every time my big space station passed over I would get massive lag

The most Whckjobian ship I could come up with. If you're wondering about the flag, it's because Kerbin always seems to lag for me, so it fits the theme. If anyone has a better flag, please post it.
