In Honor Of The Late Whackjob....

Whackjob jealous? Wow, I didn't expect that.

Oh, sure. I don't imagine for a second I'm some master of building. I have some small expertise in one limited area. That's about it.

I wasn't launched the conventional way. Launching anything like that is nearly impossible.

I 'launched' it in a single piece with Extraplanetary Launchpads.

Ah, ha! Pretty sneaky! I tried that mod once. Spent too much time trying to figure out KAS, which was pretty much a requirement, then got impatient and ditched both hehe.

And on a side note, there's a part of me that wants to try to launch that thing. Well, when I again have a computer to do so haha.

This doesn't surprise me one single bit.

But I must warn you, that thing is HUGE. I put two Kerbals on EVA on opposite sides of the ring. They were nearly 90 meters apart!

P.S.

And even though I use KJR it is still very flexible. I build it at 450 km and lowered it to 400. During the burn the normally perfect ring flattened to an oval.

Whackjob, Impatient?

My thinking at the time, while I was working on a project, was, "Why mine the ore and build the parts to assemble the ship when it'd be more fun to build the whole thing and then figure out a way to launch it?

Example. Needing to launch this:

2DIGYvm.png

... by trying this...

MNYvLfx.png

... and getting this...

Cq7t5t2.png

... so switching gears to this...

Te0rIZI.png

... finally netted me this.

Which reminds me that I will have to revive that whole project and actually FINISH it this time.

This doesn't surprise me one single bit.

But I must warn you, that thing is HUGE. I put two Kerbals on EVA on opposite sides of the ring. They were nearly 90 meters apart!

When I'm back up and running I'll try to remember to ask you for the craft file. I can think of a couple of different ways to maybe put her in orbit.

For what it's worth, ETA on return to the community is Tuesday. Hopefully. The parts I ordered for next-day delivery back on Thursday should be shipped out on Monday.

Of course, that's provided that my computer assembly chops are up to snuff, and that I don't have an ESD event while assembling something.

Interesting side note: Beards generate a TON of static electricity. I make sparks just by brushing it out.

Good news Whackjob! What are the specs for the new beast? And does it have liquid nitrogen cooling?

Tuesday... really?

Harriman: "We don't have a tractor beam."

Kirk: "You left spacedock without a tractor beam?"

Harriman: "It won't be installed until Tuesday."

---

Harriman: "The medical staff? Doesn't arrive 'till Tuesday..."

---

Kirk: "Load torpedo bays, prepare to fire on my command."

Sulu: "Captain, we don't have any torpedoes."

Kirk: "Don't tell me, Tuesday?"

Harriman: " :o "

Sorry, first thing I thought of, and it looks like the first thing you thought of, too :P

Not much of a beast. Buying rather low-end parts, which I find supremely hilarious, given the new parts are STILL more powerful than my old machine! :D

Parts as follows:

Motherboard: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1963429

Processor: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7896407

Ram (which I'm waiting on): http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7906489

Vid Card: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8869861

Other parts of course, but those are the ones that matter for the most part. In an interesting note, other KSP fans actually chipped in and threw ol' Whack here a few bucks for parts. That video card? Entirely bought on donations. I still can't believe there's that many people out there who think I'm worth giving money to, haha. I still owe 'em something in return.

Looks a lot like how I built things last summer!

-picture snip-

And that looks like what I'd build in anger for not acquiring sucess with my big ships(or at least following my definition of 'big'). No joke; sometimes, when my rockets fail, I attempt to build a super-big rocket in anger. Long story short; these rockets have a 0.55% sucess rate.

Although, on the other hand, I don't think I'd end up being that ambitious to build such a rocket. It would probably end up like another hourglass.

Building big isn't something that works the first time. Or the second time. Or the third through the thirtieth time. It takes a little investment of time and random testing to pan out. If you do go that route, I've got some advice.

First, build something as big as you can. Launch it. Watch how it fails. Try to figure out why. Then come up with a few different ways of getting around that problem. Even if you solve the problem with the first go, still do a couple of different things. Build your mental toolbox. After you do this a good number of times, eventually you get to the point where big stuff is doable. I'll cite an example.

Here's a picture of my old Arkingthaad Colony lander. I was early-mid cycle in learning how to build big. See how structurally weak and feeble it is? It would never have worked like I wanted it to! As you can see, the big problem is the link between launcher and lander. It'd never hold up.

Now, in later builds, you can see how I better tie the payload to the launcher:

Z6zASZf.png

That was the very first launch where I did something that evolved into my truss caging method. Note, of course, there are no trusses. But the rocket is around the payload, and that gives me more points where I can bind the launcher to the payload. Now, let's see the truss caging system in action:

What you are NOT seeing are the fifty to a hundred different versions between each picture. There was a lot of trial and error at work here. But that's just part of the fun.

:)

With this new specks and the NASA pack with stronger parts I believe KSP will give up and cry uncle in your first build. Go, you magnificent beast, go, make us proud.

yes, Whackjobs style with the new 3.75 meter parts and stronger joints will be an scary combination,

Unfortunately, I'd take an entire day to get out of Kerbin's inner atmosphere with a rocket like that one, due to the absurd ammount of lag.

Actually, that was only three or four thousand parts. In comparison, the one my computer finally died on was six thousand five hundred parts.

The Arkingthaad tower lander was easily my most successful mission to date. She visited the Mun and then Duna.

It's apparently going to be a while. The only remaining item I'm waiting on is the RAM to arrive. I ordered it last Thursday and paid extra for the next-day air delivery. According to the tracking number, it arrived in California on Friday and is still there.
