The Three Bridges Cup!

The Three Bridges Cup!

After considerable progress in Kerbal Aviation, the Kerbal Space Center decided to put their newfound wings to use in an extraordinarily difficult challenge:

CBog0Gk.jpg

The rules are very simple: Fly a stock craft under each of the three bridges in KSP, and return to the runway in the shortest time possible.

Your craft can have as many Kerbals as you like, or none at all… it could be powered by anything, including infiniglide… you can take whatever route you want between the three… just as long as your plane is completely stock. In addition, it must not touch anything solid at any time except for when on the runway, and it must not be flown with the debug menu cheats. The plane must remain intact through the flight. Other than that, you’re free to do whatever you want.

The three bridges are as shown: Two are in the R&D facility (easy and medium) and the third is the awning above the Astronaut Training Center (fiendishly difficult).

WfZYftA.jpg

Scores will be determined by whoever flies under each bridge once and lands on the runway, over the shortest period of time. At a minimum, please take a screenshot of the craft under each bridge and one immediately after you have slowed to a halt on the runway (Your navball should say 0.0m/s during this last screenshot!). Videos are preferred, and if you post screenshots showing questionable activity (such as discrepancies in timing, craft appearing to fly directly towards a wall in the screenshot, etc.) you may need to retake the challenge.

---

There are other distinctions you can earn.

Test Pilot, First Class: This individual completes the challenge first. Test Pilot, Second Class completes the challenge second, and so on.

Kerbal Aircraft, Light Class: This individual completes the challenge with a <2-ton craft (requires a screenshot at beginning of flight)

Kerbal Aircraft, Heavy Class: This individual completes the challenge with a >7.5-ton craft (requires a screenshot at beginning of flight)

Kerbal Aircraft, Ion Class: This individual completes the challenge with a craft solely powered by ion engines.

Kerbal Aircraft, VTOL Class: This individual completes the challenge with a VTOL craft!

Kerbal Aircraft, Blimp Class: This individual completes the challenge with a craft shaped like a blimp. (Thanks, Spacepigu!)

Kerbal Ace: This individual completes the challenge with one or more Kerbals on board. One Kerbal gives you ‘Second-Class’ standing, two Kerbals gives ‘First-Class’ standing, and three or more gives ‘Exceptional Merit’ standing.

Pilot Precision Award: This individual completes the challenge twice, just to show the first time wasn’t a fluke (requires two videos/two different sets of screenshots)

...and whoever has the fastest craft gets the Three Bridges Cup and as much glory as they can handle! (Current Cup holder is shown in GREEN.)

Please let me know if you have any comments or questions.

I want to try too!, is non cheating part clipping ok?, the part clipping you can do without the debug console?

That's fine to do.

I tried to make the rules very 'open' on purpose, so that a variety of really neat designs can be made. I'm looking forwards to all of the awesome entries that are sure to come :)

Oh my. I use FAR, getting so much as a WWII-style fighter plane through the largest bridge is difficult at 60 m/s gliding or 150 m/s under power. Getting it through either of the others is near-impossible. Maybe with a VTOL of with my ring-winged craft that can maneuver in FAR at low speed.

I tried to land like VTOL in one place (i could land semi-vertical for better time result)

Here are my tries:

I don't know if I was first, it doesn't matter. (anyway record dates)

First clip: 17:58 (UTC +1:00)

Second clip: 18:26 (UTC +1:00)

(second clip is 130% speed for music reason. Time is normal. I got original file if you want)

Video updated.

I want to ask you to add:

-Heavy Class (I have shown total weight in video)

-Pilot Precision award - There are 2 clips in video (so you could accept it as 2 videos)

Can you provide links to our posts?

I've updated the scoreboard, and frankly, I'm very impressed with your plane. Congratulations!

One question: What were the engines that you used that cast such a warm yellow glow? I'm not sure whether they're modded.

Oh, and I'm wondering how to provide links to individual posts. I've never done it before

Everything is stock. This is visual mod called Hot Rockets!

I play stock all the time ;) I'm using just visual mods ;d

-Copy link from adress

-Select text that should be with link (so edit your thread and select me or Aphobius)

-Click on "Link" icon and paste link

How do you add links on the scoreboard to individuals' posts?

Easy, in the top right corner of any post, you can see his post number in this topic. Yours is #18. If you click there, it will send you to your post. Also you can rightclick on it and copy the url :)

WHOA! That is impressive. You land like my kOS VTOL plane does in FAR and hover like the hover engines in B9.

I'll be updating this with a run of my Ion enterprise!

1:57 with my Ion enterprise. Watch the highlight if you want!

I sort of just did this for kicks. This was my first successful attempt (and 3rd try) so I'll just stick with it.

Sorry for not replying sooner! I've been checking on other parts of the forum, mostly, so your entry slid under the radar.

You did a wonderful job! I'm not going to count the clipped solar panel as your craft "losing parts" because it was so insignificant, so you receive the esteemed 'Kerbal Aircraft: Ion Class,' as well as 'Kerbal Ace, Second Class' because of your Kerbal aboard, and 'Test Pilot, Third Class' because of your entry being the third completed. I've updated the scoreboard... let me know if your craft qualifies for anything else.

(It looks absolutely awesome, by the way. Nice job with the aesthetics.)

The "Test Pilot" awards are now closed, as the first three entries have been completed. There are still numerous awards that haven't yet been earned... perhaps you'll be the first to earn them.

no mod parts and deliberately didn't use the fuel balancer. 2nd pic looks like i used the gear but in truth the gear would have raised the craft up to 70m. several edits were needed to the original design like the drastically lowered tail plane and swept the wings back in the editor *missed robotics parts for this since this is a stock challenge :( *. getting 13 flying tons under a ""''bridge"""" wasn't easy and i wouldn't have even attempted if you didn't suggest it was possible. At least their isn't a requirement for IVA... yet

looking back i should have rebound my screenshot button to select instead of using my nose to hit f1. sorry this isn't in video *cpu is too weak* and it took 5minutes and a second anyway so no records smashed here, this is just for imaginary achievement points.

Added. While you're time wasn't great, your enormous and extremely heavy non-VTOL plane is really very neat. Congrants on your completion of the challenge! Everyone who completes the challenge is a winner in my book.

Here's my entry - 1:18 seconds. Just barely beat the current highscore of 1:19. I'm sure I could do way better, but I'm tired of doing this for now.

Thanks for a great challenge! It was something great to make a short video about.

Skip to 1:19 to see my actual successful attempt.
