Live Launch: Soyuz -> ISS

Recommended Posts

the soyuz block I (the stage just below the spacecraft) is dropped before achieving full orbital - so it will burn up when reentering atmosphere.

it's the soyuz spacecraft who finished orbital insertion, just after separation (basically, when we saw the cosmonauts be 'nudged' in their seats, was when the engine stopped :P). (the spacecraft will afterwards make several burns for the rendez-vous with iss)

He just said they're already orbiting. So they don't coast to apoapsis?

In KSP it's unusual to not coast because Kerbin is so small. The much higher orbital velocity in real life means it takes longer to reach orbital velocity, which means earth has more time to slow your ascent.

Try to make orbit in KSP with RSS. In order to have time to coast to apoapsis you need ridiculous TWR, which means the rocket is overpowered and could do with smaller (cheaper) engines.

Sweet. Back in 3 hours then :)

It's on my to-do list.

Just a question: on certain days and at a certain time, you can see the ISS passing over your head. Do you know if a Soyuz is also visible?

I would have tried this tonight, because, here in Italy, I have an ISS pass (a very good one, near my zenith and with a nice magnitude) just one hour AFTER the scheduled RV.

Damn, I'll try with TMA-13, or maybe with another craft that takes more time to RV with the station.

EDIT Aarrrrghhh!!! I have a passage at 10deg above the horizon just minutes before RV, I don't think it's visible at all. If they planned it one orbit later...

Apparently the Soyuz experienced an attitude control problem during the third RV burn attempt. No serious issues yet but right now the RV is delayed to the old 2-day profile.
