As a KSP veteran today's news of the Soyuz mission leaves me thinking ...

I hate it when that happens!

How many times have I started a rendezvous maneuver only to realize I was thrusting the wrong way. Happens when I have had control in the wrong part or port. I love the view in a lander from an upside down cupola on the base, but don't leave control there!!! So often turning the other way round and thrusting, or trying to do as large a burn with thrusters is just a waste as I would be way past where I would need to be, but in a closer orbit and therefore have to wait longer than if I just recalculate from the one I am in as soon as I realize my mistake.

And where exactly was that maneuver node?

Don't forget that with the orbital module Soyuz has pretty decent living space and everything you'd need for several days in free flight (including sanitation system). And it also carries some supplies to the station.

I dont think they have the supplies for two weeks ;)

I know, but I'm trying to say that if Borman and Lovell spent 2 weeks on Gemini, then those poor guys will survive a day and a half in a capsule with 10 m3 of living space and a toilet. It's not that bad.

That was an allusion to KSP, this being KSP General Discussion.

Yeah, I figured that out a little too late. I was just trying to point out that they'll survive a day and a half, it's not the end of the world. I probably should have said that to the guy below you.

Back on topic, they should have pressed F9.

Sitting down for 34 hours? Can they stretch there legs in the soyuz? If not id start having a bad time at about 10 hours in.

The Soyuz spacecraft has an orbital module with anemities such as 5m³ leg stretching space and a toilet. The crew sits in the tiny reentry module both during launch and descent, but while in space they'll be able to use both modules.

Also IIRC the 2-day docking approach is/was actually the standard procedure most of the time. They're just trying for the fast rendezvous for convenience and, failing that, fall back to the normal one.

Yep, turns out despite outside appearances the soyuz spacecraft has quite a bit more internal space than the Apollo capsule. The soyuz re-entry module shape is specifically designed to be a good compromise between aerodynamic properties and to maximise internal volume for the surface area.

According to Wikipedia, a TMA soyuz can support 3 people in orbit for 30 days, quite a bit of time so hopefully this mission has enough supplies for that long in the worst case scenario.

We all know the Russians don't go anywhere without vodka -- they are all probably drinking buddies after 34 hours in close quarters.

Hopefully that is the case. Every soyuz supposedly has a gun aboard, bad time to get on someone's bad side up there.

Which reminds me of Bobly and Bob, who are still on prolonged Minmus observation together in a lander can...

The first Mun landing was an success, and we are proud to anonce the first Mun base as an mission extension, the landing legs, engine and fuel tank worked well as crumble zones.
